The Churchill Island collection includes a number of historic objects from the late 1800s. The collection is presented in sets and series, of which this object represents the Jenkins era.Original to Amess House, when Churchill Island was purchased by the Victorian State Government in 1976. According to Carrol Schulz ('SUNDIAL TO HERB GARDEN - PROJECT 21') it is believed that the sundial was "constructed by Peter Rawlins for Sister Campbell, and it was originally sited on the North side of the Homestead Tree, near the Cannon. The base was 'faced' with rocks from the shoreline, and the Sundial itself is of a slate material. By the early 90s, the overhead canopy of the surrounding trees, began to overcome the sundial, and it could not be 'read'. It was decided to move it to a clear sunny site. The Herb Garden was considered the most suitable site, and the sundial was picked up by Front End Loader and placed on its present site in 1992." Samantha Robertson 1988 Entrant No. 1 Ref: Series 34 Items 1, 2, 42-45 SHIRE OF ELTHAM COMMUNITY PHOTOGRAPHIC SURVEY Photography is an artform which many of us practice, sometimes purely for artistic pursuit, sometimes to record the people and events in our lives. In 1988, as part of a local Bicentennial project, the Shire of Eltham conducted the Eltham Community Photographic Survey. Up to 100 entries were to be selected by a panel of photographers for entry into the Eltham Photographic Survey Exhibition. Entries had to be submitted by May 13, 1988. Entrants whose images were selected for the exhibition were contacted and requested to further submit an entry form providing entrant’s name, area of residence, age, and proposed captions. These details were then used to produce labels for the exhibition mounts. Where negatives had not been supplied, these were requested to support the display of printed enlargements mounted on 10” x 8” cardboard. The mounted prints were made available post exhibition for sale at $8.50 each for colour prints and $7.00 for B&W prints. Residents in the Shire were invited to collect a free roll of film and take a photograph of what they either liked or did not like about the area. A total of 160 entrants submitted multiple entries for the exhibition. Of those selected for exhibition, entrants ranged in age from 9 to 70 years. All custom colour and black and white printing for the exhibition was completed by Wattle Studios of Eltham. The Eltham Photographic Survey was jointly auspiced by the Shire of Eltham and Wattle Studios, of 953 Main Road, Eltham. It was also intended to hold the exhibition at a venue in the Shire’s North Riding from Monday, June 20 to Friday June 24. It was then displayed at the Were Street Theatre, Montmorency from Friday, June 24 to Thursday, July 7. Series 34: Eltham Community Photographic Survey 1988 - Prints & Documentation Series consists of 117 photographs of Shire scenes taken by members of the community. Items I - 41 are larger photographs mounted on card, which were exhibited. Items 42 - 117 are unmounted copies, alternative takes and other entries. Corresponding negatives contained in Series 35: Eltham Community Photographic Survey 1988 – Negatives which consists of 267 colour and B&W negatives and one colour slide of Shire scenes taken by members of the community. The negatives are arranged by the entrant number of the photographer. The Eltham Community Photographic Survey collection is significant to the local community as it was curated by the local community - ordinary people of all ages - representing what they liked and did not like in the area where they lived. It represents an unfiltered representation of the Shire of Eltham as it was in 1988. It also represents one of many projects as part of the national programme of events and celebrations to commemorate the bicentenary. It is a time capsule of life in the 1980s of this urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north. Fifth on the left is Harold Luxton who was Lord Mayor of Melbourne 1928-1931 and a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1930-1935. The year is unknown. One of the party holds a shield which may or may not be the Garden Week Shield. The Garden Week Shield was awarded annually to the Ideal Garden Suburb, with the decision based on the aggregate number of points gained by the gardens in each municipality. James Henry Steward (1817–1896) established J.H. Steward in London in 1852. As “Head Optician” he would have been a qualified oculist but little is known about the founder’s early life and scholastic achievements. However, given the variety of disciplines for which he undertook he was also an accredited instrument maker,he clearly was a gifted scholar and quickly gained professional recognition in a full range of fields for an instrument maker of his day. J.H Steward became incorporated as J.H. Steward Limited on 1st February,1913. The business grew from modest beginnings. Steward would sell pocket watches and assorted items at the annual competition days of "The National Rifle Association of the United Kingdom(NRA)" from a stall. As the governing body for full bore rifle and pistol shooting sports in the UK. The Association established in 1859 with the aim to improve the shooting skills of the newly formed corps of volunteers to meet the perceived threat of an invasion by the French. J.H. Steward advert first appeared in the NRA competition program of 1865. The NRA meetings were held at first on Wimbledon Common, Surrey until 1889. Then because of pressure by the local community, the NRA along with its buildings and its flourishing meetings moved further south to Brookwood, Surrey. By now the Steward operation had grown from a modest stall into a large marquee selling various optical and scientific instruments at these meetings. Throughout its long trading history the J.H. Steward company and many members of the family maintained strong ties to the NRA and competition shooting events. The NRA records show that at the end of the 19th century the NRA bestowed a Life Membership on 7 Steward family members. First presented by J. H. Steward Ltd. in 1902 was the “Steward Trophy” that is still an annual competition for teams of four from any rifle club affiliated to the NRA. There is also evidence that many family members were fine shots.The item was made by a significant instrument manufacturing company that concentrated during the middle 19th century on supplying the British military. This items pattern & design is still available as a reproduction, available on the internet. However this original seems unique as the writer cannot find another for sale or in a collection to date. The assumption is that this type of compass was made for the British artillery units given the sun dial. Ada Lyon, nee Apted (1898-1962) was a member of the Eltham War Memorial Trust which in 1945 decided that a WW2 memorial in Eltham should include a baby health centre, a children's library and a pre-school centre. Ada Lyon worked tirelessley as a member of the women's auxiliary to raise funds for the memorial. The third and final stage of the Memorial was opened in November 1961. Following her death the following year; a memorial sundial was erected in recogintion of her work for the War Memorial Trust. Words on the plaque read: "To the memory of Mrs Ada Lyon in recognition of her work for this Trust".The sundial recognising the local contribution of Ada Lyon is of local historical significance in not only recognising a woman for her contributions during an era when women were generally unrecognised publically but is also a reminder to current generations of her work and that of her peers to iniate the war memorial in honour of local enlistments in WW2.Roll of 35mm colour negative film, 10 strips.
