The hospital in King Edward Avenue Sunshine was originally known as St Andrew's Hospital and it was run by the Sisters Carruthers who in 1946 decided to retire. The hospital became the Sunshine & District Community Hospital on 15 September 1946. In the First Annual Report for the period 15 September 1946 to 30 June 1947, it is stated that of the 413 patients admitted 37.8% were members and 62.2% non members, and that the hospital was "...responsible for hospital attention under benefits to approximately 2000 residents." Just what the exact benefits were is unknown. Did members receive cheaper treatment, cheaper pharmaceuticals, guaranteed hospital bed, or something else? If anybody can provide the information it would be greatly appreciated. The 1946 cards show that L.W. Noble of Morris Street, Sunshine had a Single Membership which cost 26 shillings ($2.60) per annum, and that J.H.F Noble of the same address had a Double Membership which cost 39 shillings ($3.90) per annum. The cards were issued when payments for the first 4 weeks of membership were made, which were 2 shillings for Single and 3 shillings for Double. The stickers inside provide a record of continuing membership payments.These two cards indicate that membership of the Sunshine & District Community Hospital was a way of receiving Treatment or Membership benefits. This type of membership of a hospital appears to be a forerunner to the present day memberships provided by the various Hospital Benefits Associations. These photographs, taken by The Advocate newspaper, show the Kealba Views Hotel following the Administrative Appeals Tribunal’s decision to reject an application opposing the construction of a new bottle shop at the site. Under the proposal, the existing bottle shop (Pictured) is to be demolished and replaced with a new facility fronting Sunshine Avenue.The photographs are not the earliest view of the hotel as at one stage the hotel was a much simpler building with some detached accommodation rooms. These accommodation rooms have been demolished. The Kealba Views Hotel, now the Kealba Hotel is a suburban hotel (Pub) located on the intersection of Main Road East and Sunshine Avenue, St. Albans / Kealba. The hotel serves Kealba, St Albans, Keilor Downs, and the northern edge of Sunshine. It has been operating for several decades and is familiar landmark for locals travelling along Sunshine Avenue. These photographs, taken by The Advocate newspaper in 2000, show the City of Brimbank Municipal Offices, formerly the administrative building of the City of Sunshine. In 2016, Brimbank relocated its civic operations to the newly constructed Brimbank Community and Civic Centre on Hampshire Road, Sunshine. Subsequently, the site was sold to private developers and remained vacant for many years. During this prolonged period, the building was repeatedly vandalised, and several fires were lit inside. Ultimately, the City of Brimbank issued the developer with a demolition notice. The Sunshine Municipal Offices in Alexandra Avenue Sunshine opened in 1967. The building was designed by Gordon Stuart Warmington, a former Sunshine resident. The building was a substantial modernist civic structure with a distinctive boomerang / Y‑shaped plan. Its most iconic feature is the dramatic stained‑glass mural panel projecting over the main entrance featuring a modern sun motif referencing Sunshine’s industrial identity and the Sunshine Harvester Works logo. During the 1970's and 1980's additional wings and extension were added to the eastern side of the building. The building served as the City of Sunshine’s Town Hall until the municipality was abolished in 1994, when Sunshine merged into the newly created City of Brimbank. After the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre in Hampshire Road opened in 2016, the Council moved its corporate and library operations to the new building. The Alexandra Avenue site was sold to developers in 2018 for $5.58 million. The building then fell into disrepair and was subject to a number of arsonist attacks, squatting, drug taking and other criminal activity. The building is protected by heritage overlays, particularly for its stained‑glass mural and original 1960s form. In November 2025, the City of Brimbank ordered the owners of the site to undertake some emergency demolition works to make the site safe. The stained‑glass mural panel was dismantled in pieces and has been store away for future restoration works by the City of Brimbank.These photographs record the part demolition of a former City of Sunshine Civic building from December 2025 to February 2026. These pictures were captured after the stained‑glass mural panel was dismantled and put into storage. The stretch of Kororoit Creek between Deer Park and Sunshine South contains several pedestrian bridges. Many of these structures were rudimentary in design and, in numerous cases, poorly constructed. One of the more unusual examples is the bridge at Boorham Street, Sunshine South, which links across the Kororoit Creek to Pickersgill Avenue, Sunshine West. This bridge was originally built by the Watkins family many decades ago, using the chassis of two railway wagons. Its purpose was entirely practical: to move cattle across the creek. At the request of Council, the family later donated the structure, and it was subsequently decked to allow public use. However, the bridge remained inadequate, and in 1978 Council officers recommended that it be replaced as soon as possible.The Watkins family were early agricultural settlers along the Kororoit Creek corridor, contributing to the rural foundations of Sunshine South and Sunshine West before the rise of large‑scale industry.
