Its creation marked a turning point in recognising the West as a culturally rich region whose stories had long been overlooked. The Melbourne’s Living Museum of the West is located in the former Raleigh Boiling Down Works, Melbourne Meat Preserving Company and Humes Pipe Works.Melbourne’s Living Museum of the West documents migration, work, industry, women’s history, integrates environmental and landscape history into heritage interpretation and treat the region itself as the museum, rather than a single building.5208.01 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1986.jpg 5208.01 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1986.pdf 5208.02 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1987.jpg 5208.02 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1987.pdf 5208.03 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1988.jpg 5208.03 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1988.pdf 5208.04 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1989.jpg 5208.04 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1989.pdf 5208.05 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1990.jpg 5208.05 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1990.pdf 5208.06 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1991.jpg 5208.06 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1991.pdf 5208.07 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1992.jpg 5208.07 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1992.pdf 5208.08 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1993.jpg 5208.08 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1993.pdf 5208.09 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1994.jpg 5208.09 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1994.pdf 5208.10 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1995.jpg 5208.10 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1995.pdf 5208.11 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1999 - 2000.jpg 5208.11 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 1999 - 2000.pdf 5208.12 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2003 - 2004.jpg 5208.12 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2003 - 2004.pdf 5208.13 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2004 - 2005.jpg 5208.13 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2004 - 2005.pdf 5208.14 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2005 - 2006.jpg 5208.14 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2005 - 2006.pdf 5208.15 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2014 - 2015.jpg 5208.15 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2014 - 2015.pdf 5208.16 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2020 - 2021.jpg 5208.16 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2020 - 2021.pdf 5208.17 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2022 - 2023.jpg 5208.17 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2022 - 2023.pdf 5208.18 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2023 - 2024.jpg 5208.18 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2023 - 2024.pdf 5208.19 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2024 - 2025.jpg 5208.19 - Melbourne's Living Museum of the West Incorporated Annual Report 2024 - 2025.pdfmelbourne's living museum of the west, raleigh boiling down works, melbourne meat preserving compan, humes pipe works -

... Sunshine and District Historical Society Incorporated The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre, 775 Ballarat Road, Deer Park 3023. Brimbank Library, 301 Hampshire Road, Sunshine 3020. melbourne In 1948 during her Australian tour Helen Keller visited the west suburban SUNSHINE GIRLS TECHNICAL SCHOOL, to express her thanks for a letter written by the students in support of her work with deaf and blind people. ...In 1948 during her Australian tour Helen Keller visited the west suburban SUNSHINE GIRLS TECHNICAL SCHOOL, to express her thanks for a letter written by the students in support of her work with deaf and blind people. She and her travelling companions presented the school with their signatures. Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880 and due to an illness at the age of 20 months lost both her sight and hearing. Helen was taught to communicate by Anne Sullivan who wrote words into her hand, and she also learned to speak by touching the throat and lips of people as they spoke. In June 28, 1904 Helen Keller graduated from Radcliffe College with a Bachelor of Arts degree, being the first deaf and blind person to do so. In October 1914 Polly Thomson joined up with Helen and Anne. Helen published an account of her religious beliefs and an autobiography, and in 1930 the three women travelled to Scotland, England and Ireland. In 1931 they participated in the first World Council for the Blind. After Anne Sullivan Macy died in 1936 Helen and Polly continued to travel to several countries. In 1943 Helen visited blind, deaf, and disabled soldiers in a USA military hospital, which she described as "the crowning experience of my life". In 1946 Helen and Polly made their first world tour for the American Foundation for the Overseas Blind and over the next 11 years visited 35 countries. In 1955 Helen became the first woman to be honoured with an honorary degree from Harvard University. In 1960 Polly Thomson died, and in 1961 Helen suffered her first stroke and so retired from public life. In 1964 President Johnson conferred the Presidential Medal of Freedom however she was unable to attend the ceremony. On June 1, 1968 Helen died in her sleep, and her ashes have been interred with those of Anne and Polly at the National Cathedral. Over 1200 mourners attended the funeral. It is significant that Helen Keller actually took the time and effort to visit the Sunshine Girls Technical School to thank the students for their supporting letter. Helen Keller's many achievements show that a severely handicapped deaf and blind person can make significant contributions to society, if they apply themselves and receive assistance from dedicated friends. Local government for this rural area to the west ...From around circa 1850 Braybrook was already well established and became a staging point for prospectors on their way to the diggings. Local government for this rural area to the west of Melbourne came when the BRAYBROOK ROAD DISTRICT was proclaimed on 28 May 1860. This authority was superseded on 23 January 1871 with the formation of the SHIRE OF BRAYBROOK. The Shire of Braybrook existed for about 80 years during which time it experienced significant industrial growth. The Shire of Braybrook ceased to exist in 1951 when the CITY OF SUNSHINE was formed. The Coat of Arms informs the observer that the Shire of Braybrook was initially a rural area with its images of a cow, sheep, and hay. The reference to industry however probably does not indicate adequately the large growth in industrial activity that occurred within the Shire. Circular board of Masonite painted by A. H. Walker which is a true depiction of the Coat of Arms for the Shire of Braybrook. It is mainly blue, yellow and red coloured with black writing, and has images of a cow, sheep, and hay, and also indicates a reference to industry.Shire of Braybrook Victoria / Dieu Et Mon Droit / By Industry / A. The school transferred to Lachlan Road, West Sunshine when the new building was completed. In 1961 the proportion of students from European background was almost 52% and those of British-Australian almost 48%. By 1965 the number of students totalled 699, with 28 of them being the first to do the Form 6 (Year 12) Matriculation exam. By 1969 the number of students had increased to the point that some classes were held in shelter sheds. In 1992 the multi campus Sunshine College was formed through the amalgamation and restructure of six schools: Sunshine West High School, Sunshine Technical School, Ardeer High School, North Sunshine Technical School, Sunshine High School, and Tottenham Technical School. The last two school sites were closed and are now occupied by Victoria University and the Tottenham English Language Centre respectively. Sunshine West High School became the junior West Campus of Sunshine College. The style of school uniform displayed here is not used by the Sunshine College. The girls had two sets of uniforms, one for the summer and one for the winter. The frock and blazer (as displayed) were for the summer but a grey straw hat, grey socks, and black shoes were also part of the compulsory uniform. The displayed grey v-necked jumper could be worn in both summer and winter. The winter outfit consisted of a blue shirt, a tie (as displayed), a grey box pleated tunic, blazer, grey stockings, black shoes, a blue felt hat and grey gloves. Of particular interest is that the boys did not have to wear the feminine looking style of grey jumper with the pink and blue stripes. They wore a dark blue jumper. There was a 'uniform inspection' carried out after the Monday morning assembly and the Prefects had the task of policing students to make sure that they wore the full complement of items, both to and from school. The 3 badges indicate that the female student was a member of the School Council, which had replaced the Prefects around 1969 or 1970, and she was also Captain of one of the 4 Sports Houses and of her Form. (2) Blue and white striped frock. (3) Light grey v-necked jumper with dark blue, light blue, and pink stripes around the neck and the cuffs. The event was part of the Cooinda Festival, which was a multicultural community celebration held in Sunshine, Victoria, during the 1970s, with strong ties to local Aboriginal and migrant communities. The name Cooinda, an Aboriginal word meaning “happy place” or “meeting place” reflects the festival’s inclusive and celebratory spirit. The Sunshine Bowling club was founded around 1910, and is closely tied to the development of Sunshine as a company town under H.V. McKay, the industrialist behind the Sunshine Harvester Works. The club was located in the Sunshine Gardens, Andersons Road, Sunshine. In 2007, the club folded. Later the club rooms were demolished, and the former bowling rink was converted into a lawn area, and which is now part of the H.V. McKay Memorial Gardens. Its story weaves together hunting culture, early white settlement of the Deer park area, explosives manufacturing, and community arts. This video features the second celebration of the opening of The Hunt Club and Community Arts Centre on the 26th November 1988.A hotel was first located at this site in 1850's. Over the years the hotel has been called various names including the Kororoit Creek Hotel, the Barley Mow Hotel & Plough Hotel. This hotel was described as an old English style wooden building pub consisting of eleven rooms exclusive of a storeroom and kitchen. The current Hunt Club Hotel building was built in 1886 on the former site of the burnt down ruins of the original hotel. It is one of the few 19th Century buildings remaining in the district. The hotel was named by the members of the Melbourne Hunt Club who used the hotel as a base for their deer hunts after leasing land nearby of over 300 acres from Sir W. J. Clarke. The Hunt Club Hotel operated between 1886 and 1911. In 1911, the hotel became a private residence. In 1921, the Australian Explosives and Chemicals Co. Ltd (later ICI Australia) purchased the Hunt Club building. By the 1950s, the Hunt Club building was converted into a research and staff training centre. In 1982, the City of Sunshine purchased the Hunt Club building. In 1985, it officially opened as the Hunt Club Community and Arts Centre. It transformed dramatically with the arrival of railways, the rise of Braybrook Junction/Sunshine, and the industrial boom driven by H.V. McKay’s Harvester Works. The area was first organised as the Braybrook Road District on 28th May 1860, after a public meeting at the Shamrock Hotel in Albion. The district was enormous, extending from Melton to Dynon Road on the West Melbourne swamp. Early settlement clustered around Solomon’s Ford on the Maribyrnong River, a key crossing for travelers heading to Geelong, Williamstown, and the goldfields. On 23rd January 1871, the Road District became the Shire of Braybrook. Council meetings were initially held in Maidstone, reflecting the early population centres. The Braybrook Shire Hall in Deer Park was built in 1885. That 1885 building was the first official hall and council offices for the Shire of Braybrook, long before the municipality shifted its centre of gravity toward Sunshine. It stood near the Deer Park Hotel and served as the administrative heart of the shire during the late 19th century. The Braybrook Shire Hall at Deer Park effectively closed as a council headquarters in 1930, when the Shire of Braybrook shifted its administrative centre to Sunshine. In 1951, the Shire of Braybrook was renamed the City of Sunshine, reflecting the shift of population and industry eastward. In 1994 - 1995 the Kennett Government reduced Victoria’s councils from 210 to 78, the largest restructuring of local government in the state’s history and this part of the City of Sunshine became the City of Brimbank.
