Wilhelm and Marie Wischer were the founding couple of the successful Wischer phosphate and chemical works at Yarraville, Melbourne. They had emigrated from Magdeburg in Germany in the late 19th century and had undertaken the journey to Australia over three months. During this voyage, several passengers had died and a number of babies had been born. The travellers had endured storms, injuries, broken equipment, and numerous other privations. The couple had lived in the suburb of Hawthorn and their family history is documented in a book by John Wischer. The link is in references this document from "Kainos Books" and makes for fascinating reading as it reveals an account of life in Melbourne during the late 19th and early 20th century. The book also gives an account of the Wischer phosphate mining activities on Ocean Island in 1904, Wischer & Co. eventually merged with Mt. Lyell Chemical works. An item giving a snapshot of early industrial life in Melbourne during the late 19th century with also an interesting story of early migration to Australia. The item also makes us aware of the privations early migrants had in trying to establish a life in a new country and how the Wischer family overcame these challenges to establish a very successful business.Jug, clay large with handle glazed screw on stopper. Walsall in England was regarded as the world`s greatest centre of the saddlery trade. The town's craftsmen began to specialise in making bits, stirrups and spurs in the Middle Ages, developing into fully-fledged makers of saddlery and harness, by the end of the nineteenth century. As a result, over a hundred firms were exporting their products throughout the British Empire and beyond. The Walsall firms flourished as horses were so vital to everyday life in Victorian Britain and the colonies. The Walsall area emerged as a major supplier of military saddlery and harnesses, with one company supplying an astonishing 100,000 saddles for the British army in the First World War. The twentieth century saw the rise of light leather goods, such as handbags, cases and gloves. With the coming of the motor car, these products became the mainstay of the Walsall leather industry. Many companies supplied this trade and Dixon tools was one, as a commercial and industrial equipment supplier to the trade. The company started in 1843 and has continued to produce tools for the leather industries up and till August 2017 when the company was dissolved.A vintage item used in the leather working industries see additional notes at end of document for clarity on how the item was used and it's importance in making leather goods.Lap Skiver has a roller missing. In the early 1900's, Bendigo had at least four companies treating parcels of gold ores containing mineral sulphides (pyrites). They were the United Pyrites Co., Spargo's, Liddell's and Leggo's Treatment Works. Many banks also had their own assay equipment with a single furnace and a brick chimney n a small building in the yard behind the bank, for example, the Bank of New South Wales in View Street, Bendigo. The assay teaching facility at the Bendigo School of Mines was built in the 1880's and extended, to include a chemical laboratory in 1892. The building was brick with a round brick chimney to a height of about 7 metres above the ground. James Lang opened a shop and bakery in Gallowgate in 1817. His nephew, John Macfarlane, joined the business and took over when James died. A new bread factory was built at Wesleyan Street in Calton in 1880. The firm decided to move into machine-made biscuit manufacturing and opened the Victoria Biscuit Works on an adjoining site in 1886. Expansion to London followed, with the opening of the Imperial Biscuit Works in Fulham in 1903. In 1925 a new Victoria Biscuit Works with modern equipment was opened in Tollcross. Macfarlane Lang joined with other biscuit manufacturers to form United Biscuits in 1948. United Biscuits has since expanded to become one of Britain's leading food suppliers, and the Tollcross factory remains a major employer in Glasgow's East End at the beginning of the 21st century.Lidded biscuit tine decorated with an image of a doll's house on the lid. This measuring glass for fluids was used mostly used for medicines but could have been used for measuring photography chemicals. The glass was once owned by Dr W R Angus, who practised in Warrnambool in the 20th century. It was donated by members of his family. Dr Angus enjoyed photography amongst other hobbies. The maker, J.W. Small & Co. was a long established camera and photography business Camera Corner, in 270 Little Collins Street, Melbourne. At the 1887 Melbourne Exhibition the company showcased bicycles as well as a wide range of photography equipment including cameras and any other accessories and needs for the amateur photographer. In 1887 the sole proprietor of the business was Mr Herbert Small. The firm offered the service of developing and enlarging pictures. In 1894 the firm advertised as photographic and lantern material manufacturers. There were branches in Adelaide and Sydney also. The company was still in business in the 1920's, when Dr Angus graduated as a doctor and surgeon. The medicine glass is significant for its association with Dr William Roy Angus, who practice medicine in Warrnambool for several decades. He and his wife were heavily involved in the community. Dr Angus was also connected to the maritime history of Warrnambool, being the last Port Medical Officer. The glass is also associated with the Melbourne company J.W. Small &O Co, which was 'long established' in 1887.Medicine glass (dose cup or measuring glass), for measuring fluids. This glass holds 1 fluid ounce. Wide mouth with pouring lip tapers sharply to narrow centre of the base, which has a round flat foot. Black inscriptions are on the side of the glass, showing fluid ounces and fluid drachmas. An opaque label on the back shows maker details. The other side has a label. This guillotine is a hand operated machine specifically designed to cut through multiple sheets of paper or card. It has a very heavy and sharp single blade knife mounted between vertical guides or runners. The main users of a machine like this is in by the printing and publication binding industry. Book binding companies use a guillotine to evenly trim the pages of a book after it has been bound. The way the guillotine is used is - paper or card is stacked squarely on the flat table and pushed firmly against the back guide - the handle below the table at the front of the machine is wound around, which brings the back guide forward, pushing the paper stack forward and positioning the centre of the stack below the vertical frame - the upper wheel is wound around, which brings the clamp and firmly in position on top of the paper, to hold it very firmly - the large wheel on the side of the machine is turned around to lower the long sharp blade down onto the pages and cut them through. The sharp edge of the blade is protected somewhat from becoming blunt; a block of wood sits in the table under the stack of paper An early model of a guillotine was patented in 1837 by Thirault, who built a model with a fixed blade. Guillotines similar in principal to this one were patented by Guillaume Massiquot in 1844 and 1852. Over the years many improvements have been made and operation has moved from man power to electricity. Oscar Friedheim Ltd. was the importer and wholesaler of a large range of machinery and equipment for the printing and bookbinding industry. He sold most of his equipment under his own name. On this guillotine or paper cutter he refers to the origin of the guillotine’s manufacture only as “German Manufacrure”. A reference book “Commercial Bookbinding: a description of the processes and the various machines used" by Geo. Stephen, 1910, recommends Oscar Friedheim, amongst others, for the supply of “reliable cutting machines for hand or power”. It also recommends Oscar Friedheim’s for a wide range of other printing machinery and processes. OSCAR FRIEDHEIM LIMITED, LONDON Oscar Friedheim Ltd. was established in 1884 and operated from Ludgate in London. The company was an importer and wholesale supplier in the 1880’s, offering machinery and equipment for the printing and packaging industry for the UK and Ireland. The company became incorporated in 1913. An advertisement of 1913 includes a telegraphic code plus two telephone numbers for Oscar Friedheim Ltd and invites readers to call at the Ludgate, London, showrooms to see the machines working. The company later became Friedheim International Ltd. The book titled “Friedheim, A Century of Service 1884-1984 by Roy Brewer, celebrates Oscar Friedheim’s achievements. Friedheim International currently operates from Hemel Hempstead, on the northern outskirts of London UK. It promotes itself as “… the leading supplier of finishing, converting and packaging machinery to the printing, graphic arts, and highly varied packaging industries in the UK and Ireland. The company’s policy is simple – “employ the best people, work with the best equipment manufacturers in the world, and treat our customers as partners!” The company still sells guillotines. The guillotine is significant for its ability to represent aspects of the printing trade in Warrnambool and in a typical port town circa 1850 to 1910. It represents communication methods and processes used in the time before electrically powered equipment became common in industry.Guillotine (or paper cutter), hand operated. Metal framework with vertical guides, stand and metal mechanical parts including wheels and gears. Table with back guide; handle below front of table winds to move the back guide. A wheel at top of machine winds to adjust pressure of the clamp on the work on the table below it. The cutting blade fits between vertical guides; a timber insert in the table below the blade helps minimise the loss of sharpness of the blade. A handle on the side of the machine turns a large spoked wheel, which rotates a large gear, causing the blade to move up and down. Makers details are on a small oval plaque with embossed maker’s details is screwed onto main body. Maker is O Friedheim, London, and the machine is of German manufacture, circa late 1880’s.Maker’s plaque inscribed "O. These photograph, taken by The Advocate in 1991, were published as part of the newspaper’s ongoing column profiling local traders and businesses across the district. These photographs are of three long time serving employees of the Spaldings Factory located at Ballarat Road North East Corner of McIntyre Road, Sunshine North. The photograph features employees Phyllis Shimmin, Barry Priest (Supervisor, Golf Ball Department) and Tom Tribe (Machine Setter and Operator). When the image was taken, Phyllis had accumulated 43 years of service and Tom an outstanding 53 years of continuous service with the company. As the factory faced difficult times, the three long-serving employees reminisced about its peak years. During its most successful period, the factory produced a wide range of sporting goods, including tennis and squash equipment, shuttlecock bases, table tennis tables, baseball and softball products, and doggie bell balls for pet shops. It also served major industrial clients, manufacturing rubber components for Ford and International Harvester, along with hoses for Massey Ferguson and Connor Shea. Spalding was one of the last major manufacturing factories to close in Sunshine, following the decline of many of the area's industrial employers. Its closure reflected broader changes in Australian manufacturing, including the globalisation of production to lower-cost countries, trade liberalisation and reduced tariff protection, increasing international competition, advances in technology that required substantial investment in new equipment and processes, rising labour and operating costs, and industry consolidation, whereby large corporations centralised production or relied on specialist suppliers rather than maintaining diverse local manufacturing operations. The Sunshine Advocate’s feature on local traders and businesses was a modest yet well‑liked column that played a meaningful role in strengthening community identity. Through these regular profiles, the newspaper promoted local businesses and helped shape Sunshine’s understanding of its developing commercial district.7392.01 - Spaldings Employees Ballarat Road Sunshine North 1991 Photographs (Advocate 187.3).JPG 7392.02 - Spaldings Employees Ballarat Road Sunshine North 1991 Photographs (Advocate 187.3).JPGspaldings, ballarat road, sunshine north
