Jubilee Reunion 12/12/1936 School No. 2778 established 1886 at first using a Recreation Hall in Albany Crescent near the corner of Windsor Crescent, Surrey Hills. Surrey Hills was first subdivided into urban blocks in 1883 when the train line to Lilydale was opened. Previously the children of local farmers walked to Balwyn school or to a small school in St. Brigids Church which was on the northeast corner of the present Riversdale Road, and Warrigal Road Church. Information from the donor by email gives: Norma Pryde is identified as the girl in the second row on the far right. Her parents Norman & Hilda Pryde lived at 50 Broughton Road, Surrey Hills. The home was named 'Strathaven' after the town in Scotland where Norman's father came from. Norman & Hilda were married in 1923. Norma was born in 1924. Norman worked for Moran & Cato so the family moved around a lot for his work and is thought to have rented out the house from time to time. During some time in the 1920s they were listed on electoral rolls in Nyah West and then in 1942 they were listed in Hamilton. When the war ended they came back to Melbourne and in the late 1940s built a home at Blackburn. Norma married John Cleak in 1947 in Camberwell. This photo is representative of the large classes that were common in the interwar period.An original B&W postcard photo of a class taken outside against a brick wall. There are 34 boys in 2 rows. Identified as John Colin Reaburn, also known as Jack (1899 -1987) - John was born at home in Russell Street, Surrey Hills and grew up in the area, was educated at Surrey Hills State School and University High, becoming an accountant. He moved away as he progressed in business, including to overseas posts. In retirement he returned to the Surrey Hills area and in the early 1980's provided help and encouragement while the Surrey Hills history collection was in its early stages. John had a keen memory and contacted some of his early acquaintances to further reminiscences of some of Surrey Hills while carefully researching material to confirm his own. John Spencer Clough was the Head Teacher at Surrey Hills during the Depression and the Second World War years. He had a long history in the education department. He was born in Eaglehawk in 1889; married Lily Carpenter in 1915 and died in Camberwell in 1952. He served in France during the First World War. He enlisted in 1915 (SERN 5671) aged 26; occupation school teacher. Electoral rolls place him at the following places as a school teacher: 1912 - Sea View, Warragul 1913 - Leongatha 1914, 1915, 1916 - Carpendeit 1919 - Portland 1922 - Scarsdale 1925, 1926 - Werribee 1928 - Echuca 1931 - Ballarat 1935 - living Wattle Valley Road, Camberwell. At Surrey Hills he was succeeded by Mr Lewis Wheeler. The girl presenting Mr Clough with his retirement gift was Margaret Haines who made the presentation on behalf of the students. Date is approximate; early Empire Day celebrations were held in May each year between 1906 and 1911 to commemorate Queen Victoria's birthday. Headmaster, George Bennett was later headmaster at Balwyn State School, which his son Gordon (later General Gordon Bennett) attended. Miss Amy Wise was a teacher at Surrey Hills State School for her entire career. (There is information in filing cabinet re Amy Wise). Note (undated) from John Reaburn states that an issue of SHNN claimed Major General Bennett was a pupil at SHPS. He stated: "I very much doubt this, as he was 19 years of age when his father was headmaster in 1906. Before that the whole family attended Balwyn State School. The statement should be substantiated or corrected".Black and white photo copied from a postcard of staff and students assembled outside Surrey Hills Primary School for Empire Day celebrations. Some children carry Union Jack flags. The cadet corps of the school stands in line on the path against the picket fence of the school carrying drums and 'rifles'. There are a number of adults in the background, presumably teachers and parents; two are identified. Centre is headmaster, Mr George Bennett and at the right is teacher, Miss Amy Wise. The photo is taken in Beatrice Avenue looking towards Canterbury Road. He bought a horse and cart in order to be able to make deliveries for trades people and hence pay his way through technical school. He attended technical school 3 evenings per week studying building, carpentry, plumbing, electrical work and bricklaying. He built many homes in the eastern suburbs. He played tennis and attended church at Church of Christ. Married Margaret on 2/4/1955. Retired to Dromana where he was a member of the garden club at Redhill. His dates: 1913-1993. ‘Kenilworth’, 9 Beatrice Avenue was home of Edmund Holt, his wife and 3 sons Ray, Fred and Alan who attended Surrey Hills State School in their primary years. The family were very involved with the Methodist (Uniting) Church. Alan became organist and for some years also played at the Canterbury Presbyterian Church. He was well-liked from his days as a newspaper delivery boy, and after marriage lived at 62 Broughton Road and then 2 Earle Street taking part in various local activities with his wife Edna and three boys. After completing his secondary education at University High Alan joined the Public Service and after a time in the Premier’s Department moved to the Lands Department. He became Secretary of that department and after retirement moved to 13 Berry Street, Box Hill. He keenly researched the history of Surrey Hills. Children in photo identified as John Colin Reaburn, also known as Jack, and his young brother, Wallace James Reaburn. The Reaburn family came to Surrey Hills in the 1890's and first lived in Russell Street. John Colin Reaburn (B 1899 in Russell St, Surrey Hills; D 1987, Box Hill) and Wallace James Reaburn (B 1910; D 1996) were the children of John Reaburn (1873-1963) and his wife Jane (Jeannie) Nelson Harkins (1875-1959). They has a sister Winifred Jean Reaburn (1904-1983). The family later lived in Union Road on the SW corner of Guildford Road. The house was called 'Fairbank'. John completed his education to eighth grade of Surrey Hills State School, going on to University High School and became an accountant. He later moved away from the area but when the collection of local history commenced in the 1970's, John was living near Belmore Road and became involved. Mr Charles Ansell Smith of 3 Vincent Street with his family – Roy, Stan and Frank Smith and Dorothy (Mrs Cromwell). Photo is without Kenneth or Harold so possibly taken during WW1; Kenneth enlisted in 1914, Harold in 1915 and killed in 1917. The boys went to Surrey Hills State School and Dorothy to Milverton Girls School, first at 192 Union Road, it later moved to ‘Nilgard’, 221-223 Union Road. Helen Malvira Mackenzie (1865-1956) married Charles Ansell Smith (c1861-1934) in 1891. He was baptised 23 April 1861 in Tintinhull, Somerset - son of William Maxwell & Louisa Claudina Smith (nee Ansell). His father was curate of the church at the time. Helen Malvira (or Malvena) MacKenzie, known as Nellie, was the second daughter of the John Mackenzie J.P., of Westernport, and Wilcannia, N.S.W., and great granddaughter of the late Admiral Pasco, R.N. History and in particular for the vast amount of detail he gave on people and happenings. His observations have been very accurate and he has very precise recollections of the old days.
