The Linton library initially operated under the auspices of the Linton Mechanics' Institute, from around 1871. The library later received funding under Free Library schemes, and was known as the Linton Free Library or the Linton Public Library. By the time the library closed in 1975, it was a government funded public library managed through the Grenville Shire Council. The photograph was taken after renovations of the building were undertaken in 1994. Morgan, the shop and dwelling owned by Richard Ching (telegraph pole in front), and the shop and dwelling owned by Annie Brown (née Nicholls). A small building between Ching's and Brown's shops may be the workshop of Dan McMillan, bootmaker. What appears to be a laneway between the Morgan shop and the Ching dwelling was once occupied by the Surface Hill Hotel (demolished c.1911). Thomas Austin was born in Tunbridge Wells, England, in about 1822. He married Charity Ford (or Foord) in England and they migrated to Australia with their first three children in 1849. They had eight more children in Australia. The Austins lived in Linton from about 1861, where Thomas Austin ran first a post office, newsagent and stationery shop, and afterwards a tailor's shop, in Sussex St Linton next to the Grenville Shire offices. Thomas Austin moved to Kyneton in 1882. He died in Melbourne in 1888, and is buried at Linton. The Royal Standard Hotel was on the corner of Sussex and Clyde Streets, on the western side of Sussex Street. The hotel was demolished in 1926. From 'Linton - A Photographic History', p. 25: "The exact date of this photo is not known. The hotel was moved from Standard Lead, a gold diggings community west of Linton, to Sussex St, Linton, in 1861. The Duke of Edinburgh was entertained here in 1868 during a visit to Australia and the goldfields. Licensees included Mr Jackson, Mrs Rhoda Harrison, Mr Stephen Trestrail, Mrs Elizabeth Trestrail, Mr Bell, Mr T Trevarrow, MrsTrevarrow, Mr R. Edwards and Mrs [Charlotte] Godden. James Godden was the last licensee before the hotel was demolished in 1926.
