The Linton library initially operated under the auspices of the Linton Mechanics' Institute, from around 1871. The library later received funding under Free Library schemes, and was known as the Linton Free Library or the Linton Public Library. By the time the library closed in 1975, it was a government funded public library managed through the Grenville Shire Council. The photograph was taken after renovations of the building were undertaken in 1994. A small building between Ching's and Brown's shops may be the workshop of Dan McMillan, bootmaker. What appears to be a laneway between the Morgan shop and the Ching dwelling was once occupied by the Surface Hill Hotel (demolished c.1911). Thomas Austin was born in Tunbridge Wells, England, in about 1822. He married Charity Ford (or Foord) in England and they migrated to Australia with their first three children in 1849. They had eight more children in Australia. The Austins lived in Linton from about 1861, where Thomas Austin ran first a post office, newsagent and stationery shop, and afterwards a tailor's shop, in Sussex St Linton next to the Grenville Shire offices. Thomas Austin moved to Kyneton in 1882. He died in Melbourne in 1888, and is buried at Linton. The Royal Standard Hotel was on the corner of Sussex and Clyde Streets, on the western side of Sussex Street. The hotel was demolished in 1926. From 'Linton - A Photographic History', p. 25: "The exact date of this photo is not known. The hotel was moved from Standard Lead, a gold diggings community west of Linton, to Sussex St, Linton, in 1861. The Duke of Edinburgh was entertained here in 1868 during a visit to Australia and the goldfields. Licensees included Mr Jackson, Mrs Rhoda Harrison, Mr Stephen Trestrail, Mrs Elizabeth Trestrail, Mr Bell, Mr T Trevarrow, MrsTrevarrow, Mr R. Edwards and Mrs [Charlotte] Godden. James Godden was the last licensee before the hotel was demolished in 1926. This photograph was owned by George Preston, the apprentice printing worker shown third from the left in the photograph. The photograph was given to the Society by his son Ronald Preston. The printing works site was in Sussex Street, Linton, understood to have been next to the Railway Hotel. The photograph is believed to have been taken around 1895 or 1896, when George Preston was thirteen. Mary Ann Dawe migrated to Victoria with her parents William and Sarah Ann Dawe in 1857, and married Robert Simeon Nelson at Linton in 1864. At that time R. S. Nelson was a carpenter/cabinet maker with a sideline in coffin-making, whose buisiness in Sussex St was slowly evolving into that of an undertaker. Robert Simeon and Mary Ann Nelson had six children, four of whom lived to adulthood. Vera Johnson, the wife of James Eccles Johnson, lived in Linton from about 1935 until the 1950s. The Johnsons lived in the house in Sussex Street formerly owned by the Donaldson family. Vera Johnson was an active member of the Linton community - her name is mentioned in records of the Presbyterian Church, and also in records of the CWA Linton Branch. She was an enthusiastic gardener and regularly supplied flowers for the church. She had two children of her own (Eric and Betty), and often provided care for her nieces, Shirley and Elizabeth (Beth) Lock, who lived with her for extended periods when their mother was ill. Elizabeth Jane Blamire, b. 1865 and Rary Emelia Isabel Blamire, b. 1863, were two of the eight children of William Blamire and Mary Ann Blamire (née Green). The Blamire family lived at Linton, where William worked as a blacksmith and painter. Dated to late 1920s or early 1930s as Nelson building has been renovated as a Californian bungalow. Joseph Shepherd (1833-1921) migrated to Victoria with his wife Mary Tame in early 1851. They lived first at Geelong but were in Linton by 1862. Joseph Shepherd ran a grocery and general store, became a JP, and served on the Shire of Grenville Council. He was Shire President on three occasions. The subject of this photograph was unidentified for many years, but in 2014 the photograph was identified as probably of Mary Broadstock Tame, the aunt of John Burnham Tame. (J. B. Tame was the son of Mary's brother Charles Tame). Mary Broadstock Tame was the wife of Joseph Shepherd, who ran Shepherd's Family Grocery & Ironmongery store in Sussex Street, Linton. The Bank of New South Wales built a newer building at the northern end of Sussex Street in 1903-04. Slaughterhouse Hill was so named because Bennett's butchers had a slaughterhouse there.A view of Linton taken from Slaughterhouse Hill to the north-east of the town. Numerous buildings are identifiable in the photograph. In the middle foreground are the railway station, platform and station-master's house. The Grenville Standard building is visible in Clyde Street, and the Post Office and Bank of NSW buildings can be seen near the corner of Clyde and Sussex Streets. Picture in photograph album donated by Mrs Faull. The plane landed at Linton Park as part of an advertising campaign by Astor Radios in 1928. Information provided by Ron Preston of Linton: "The day the plane landed in Linton Park / late 20s. Fairbanks and Harrison operated a garage in Sussex St opposite Bryant's shop. Fairbanks was married to Carrie Murrell's sister Dorrie and William (Bill) Harrison was married to Dulcie Nicol. Among other things that the garage sold were ASTOR RADIOS. To promote ASTOR RADIO a Gypsy Moth double seater aircraft flew low over towns to advertise. ASTOR RADIO was written under both wings. by Boltes) staying overnight.
