Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.Paper certificate from Teachers Registration Council in London showing that Frank Joseph Henry Wright had attained on 1st June 1938 a Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (L.R.S.M.) and also his registration number. Miss Milne was a teacher at Linton State School for many years. It is understood she is the Assistant Teacher in the photograph of school pupils and teachers, c.1888. (Registration no. 179). Miss Milne's efforts at training the children for school concerts were often commended in newspaper reports. Linton Presbyterian Church records held at show that Helen Milne was a communicant from 1886, having transferred from Inglewood. The 'Ballarat Star', 2 July 1902, p. 6, reported that Miss Milne had been presented with a gold brooch and purse, as she had been transferred to another school and was leaving Linton. Artist Lindsay Edward and wife Jan built a house designed by Alistair Knox at 151 Old Eltham Road, Lower Plenty. Edward was born in 1919 and had studied at the National Gallery of Victoria. The Centennial mosaic covers a wall 68 feet (20.72 metres) in length and 14 feet (4.26 metres) high. Mr & Mrs Le Couteur were both employed in the Education Department. Frank was an Inspector of Schools and Frances taught at Canterbury Primary for 20 years and at Chatham Primary in 1927, the year the school opened. She loved music, attended the Salvation Army and taught music and at the Sunday School at their chapel in Guildford Road. She moved to Inala Village. This photograph was taken on the day of the school concert c.1908 and is a companion photograph to the one of the "Misses Barry's cantata group". (See registration nos. 1138, 1507, 1625 and 2018-17 - in this photograph, which mostly shows the girls' group, some of the boys can be seen in the background.) The boys are unidentified, although it is believed that the boy in the dark cap (front row) is Eric Nicholls, and other boys may include Horace Ball and Alec Thompson. The teachers are two of the Misses Barry (on RHS and LHS, in light-coloured clothing), and Miss Mary Rankin (in centre, dark dress). Note: An article in the Ballarat 'Courier', 24 August 2001 (copy of article kept with photograph), identifies the Barry sisters as Miss Lena (Helena) Barry on the left, and Miss Gertrude Barry (wearing glasses) on the right. This article also names B. Harriett Wilson was the wife of William Wilson, an active member of and preacher with the Linton Methodist congregation. This is one of two photographs of Mrs Wilson in the collection. This one appears to have been taken earlier than the other. The other photograph is Registration no. 480 (Box 14, also Mounted photograph 21), and shows a somewhat older Mrs Wilson, although Mrs Wilson is wearing the same dress in both photographs. An inscription on the back of the photograph says that this photograph was given by Mrs Wilson to F. Bryant on December 16, 1890. Part of Old Lintonian collection ; No. 126. Photographs of Mr Wilson are also in the collection - see Registration nos. 45, 479 & 642. It is understood that Mrs Wilson was one of the first teachers at Linton State School.
