"Dear Alice" Is a collection of 142 Postcards from Australia and around world, almost all of which are addressed to Miss Alice Evans, No. 2 Cox Gardens, Williamstown, dated between 1905 - 1909. These postcards form part of a collection found in the ceiling of No. 2 Cox Gardens by a local builder and carpenter Gordon Peterson. Peterson was contracted to demolish the house in the mid 1970's. The cards were held in the Estate of Gordon Peterson, along with a photo of the cottage, before demolition until donation to the historical society by his descendants in 2024. Alice Edith Evans was born in Williamstown in 1885 to parents Benjamin Samuel Evans (1833-1900), a bootmaker from Ruabon, Denbighshire, Wales and Catherine (nee Jones) (1850-1915) from Eaglehawk, near Castlemaine. Alice had three older step sisters, and two younger brothers, Benjamin and Samuel, who sadly died in infancy. Alice’s father, Benjamin, had been married previously, his wife dying during childbirth, leaving him with three daughters to care for. After leaving school, Alice was employed as a clerk with Trevor Jones & Co. (real estate agents), until her declining health prevented her from working. She was an active and well known member of the Welsh Church and Sunday School on Ferguson Street and enjoyed singing and playing in local concerts. Well known in the community, a Grand Benefit Concert was organised in her honour on 9th April, 1910, at the Mechanics Institute, Williamstown. Hosted by Mayor Cr. Wymark, the event featured a delightful program of musical performances, showcasing both individual talents and the Carlton Club Choir. Tragically, Alice passed away due to the effects of her illness on 3rd December 1910, at the age of just 25. She is buried in Williamstown Cemetery. Red Bluff was a grazing district with a few miners, a blacksmith and a storekeeper. Its 30 children used to attend school at Sandy Creek or Tangambalanga until a new school was built at Red Bluff. It opened in January 1906. The school had been proposed by T. Thomas, William Stuckey and James Payne. The original one-room school was built on land owned by Mrs A.E. Stuckey near Five Ways about 4 miles from the Huon Railway station. When the Tangambalanga school was rebuilt about 1910 the old one was annexed to Red Bluff as a second room. When the school opened about 35 pupils attended Grades 1 – VI under W. Boyd Jamieson and assistant Miss A.M Thomas. The first Committee consisted of T. Thomas, Chairman; W. H. Stuckey, Correspondent; J. Payne, C.W. Crosthwaite and T. H. Nevin. In 1914 a teacher’s residence was built. During the First World War, Frank McNamara, a teacher at the school, was awarded the Victoria Cross; another teacher Frank Collins, was killed. Or the 12 ex-students who enlisted, 11 returned. The school itself raised considerable funds for patriotic purposes. Divine Service was held twice monthly in the school for many years. The school closed in 1952 with the pupils and buildings being relocated to the Kiewa Valley Consolidated School. 'After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German).The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view.' In 1979, a series of photographs of significant gardens in Kew (Victoria) were taken during a tour by Peter Watts, Historic Gardens Coordinator of National Trust Victoria. These were later purchased to add to the collection. In the case of each photo the colour had badly degraded over time. Original colour (degraded) positive photograph of 'Inverkelty' (later Kiora, Baroona), 11 Redmond Street , Kew. The original attribution of the house as Red Bluff (or Yarra Bluff) owned by the Nott family is incorrect. Found at Hofen's Bluff at Bete Bolong in 1936 by Barry McLeod. Inspected by George Rawlings 6.2.2013.This fossil is an example of the geological history of the Orbost area.A rock with a piece of shark tooth embedded in it. It was found at Hofen's Bluff at Bete Bolong. It belongs to the Oligocene Miocene Age (20 million years ago). Thomas Clark began his career as an artist in England in the mid-1800s. He specialised in drawing and went on to teach at the Birmingham School of Design. In 1851 he left England, and it is thought that he travelled to Russia possibly to undertake an engraving commission for the Tsar. From there he travelled to Melbourne, Australia. In Australia Clark established his reputation as an artist and began painting landscapes. By 1862 the Ballarat Star reported the exhibition of several of his paintings and refers to him as, ‘an artist of eminence in Melbourne’. In 1870 Clark was appointed as the drawing master of the National Gallery School of Design where he taught several prominent Australian artists – Tom Roberts and Fred McCubbin. Clark spent most of his time in Melbourne. He did, however, travel to the Western District twice – once to undertake a commission and another time on a sketching trip. It is during one of these trips that he most likely painted Portland Bay. Portland Bay is thought of as one of Clark’s most appealing paintings . It is also fascinating because it depicts a view of Portland Bay both before the establishment of the harbour in the 1950s and prior to the lighthouse being moved in the late 1800s. This view is from Battery Point and shows the Portland Lighthouse before it was moved. It is now on the other side of the bay on Whaler’s Bluff.
