Row 3: 1st Left, "Holidaying at Cockatoo". in 1852 Stephen Charman, who had arrived in Melbourne 1842 aged 21 years as one of Henry Dendy's emigrants, purchased 160 acres in Spring Grove ( now Cheltenham). Stephen and his family lived in a wattle and daub hut and worked hard to establish a market garden, poultry and pig farm. The first Methodist Church Services were held at their home. The hat was likely worn between 1880 and 1910, and is an adorned, likely handmade example of the bonnet hats that remained popular at that time. This folder is a record of Ronald McKelvie's initial initiation into the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes in 1962 and his subsequent affiliations with different Lodges. The most recent affiliation is with the Emerald Lodge on 13 May 1988. The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes was originally founded in 1822 in England and in Sydney, Australia in the 1860s and in Victoria in 1913, providing social support and friendship for members and donations to registered Australian charities and the needy. An examination of the rule book shows quite prescribed formalities required of members. In the late 1950s there were more than 12,000 members in Victoria at 340 lodges but by the 2000s the membership numbers were rapidly decreasing. The Emerald Lodge no longer exists.This rule book and associated records provides an insight into an organisation for men which focused on member and community support and which had members throughout Victoria including at Emerald. This petticoat likely belonged to Ellen Dowsett (1858-1953) of Maidstone, Victoria. This style of clothing was common in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and this specific example was most likely in use in the 1890s. It could also have belonged to Ellen's daughter, Ruby May Selina Wallace (1891-1973), although this is less likely. It was donated by an Emerald resident who received it from Ruby. Petticoats and underskirts were worn for several purposes; this one may have been used to add warmth and/or comfort to a larger outfit. It was made with a sewing machine, but throughout its use was hand-repaired: handsewn stitches mark the addition of an extra piece of fabric or the repair of a deteriorating stitch near the hem.This petticoat is an example of 1890s fashion and the handiwork that went into prolonging its lifespan.This petticoat/underskirt is entirely constructed from black satin. Near the waistband, the underskirt is fastened with three press-stud buttons and a hook. There are five stitch lines down the length of the petticoat, where separate pieces of fabric were joined to create the finished product. At the hem, an additional piece of the same fabric is handsewn on the inside of the petticoat with green-brown string; this may have been added to repair or lengthen the skirt. The hem includes a ribbon of purple fabric adorned with a purple fringe on the inside of the skirt. If it belonged to Ruby - the most likely owner - she likely wore it towards the end of that decade and in the early 1910s, when it was a fashionable piece for a young woman. It appears some internal handsewn repairs have been made, ensuring greater longevity for the outfit.This bodice is a very elaborate and interesting example of 1900s fashion.This black bodice is adorned with elaborate patterns sewn into the lace that decorates the front, back and sleeves of the item. Its interior is lined with a lighter fabric and supported by several whalebones, providing structure to the bodice. The outside appears unstructured with deflated sleeves and a gathered front. This sewing machine screwdriver likely belonged to Ruby May Selina Wallace (1891-1973) of Inglewood, Victoria. It was donated by an Emerald resident. Several items of clothing owned by Ruby or her mother Ellen Dowsett (1858-1953) are also in the Emerald and District Museum collection; the sewing machine associated with this screwdriver likely played a part in the maintenance, repair and possible creation of several of those items. Sewing machine screwdrivers are still used in the operation and repair of modern sewing machines, but it is rare to find bent wire versions like this item, which was also designed for an older model of sewing machine. This tool is representative of the processes of making and maintaining clothes in early 20th century domestic life, is no longer in common manufacture in this form, and was involved in the creation of several items in the collection.This screwdriver made of bent metal wire consists of a loop (ideal for holding during operation), a shaft bent in a rounded right angle, and a flat head pointing perpendicular to the direction of the loop. The right angle allows for more turning force to be applied through the head of the screwdriver than would be possible with a straight version, and makes it easier to access certain parts of the sewing machine.N/A1920s, textiles, clothing
