Handwritten and typed copy of a report in the Bendigo Advertiser Mon 11/1/1892 of a fire which totally destroyed the engine-house at Lazarus Coy's mine at New Chum on Sunday 10th January at 2 a. m. Last page has a copy of a letter to the Editor of the Advertiser from William Nolan, Captain, G. S. V. F. B. contradicting Superintendent Daymond's statement that said the City Brigade had first water on the fire and the Golden Square was next. William Nolan says they had water on the fire ten minutes before the City Brigade arrived. He was hoping the Superintendent would rectify his mistake. Three page document hand written by Albert Richardson, on the history of Victoria Hill, Ironbark. 'one of the richest areas on Bendigo field. In the first six years, £1,200,000 worth of gold was obtained. Almost every claim returned a fortune.' Page three title: Other features on Victoria Hill. This hill reached by a short and excellent access road gives a magnificent view of Bendigo and Golden Square, and a very good view of another tourist attraction, Lansells 'Fortuna' now Survey Regiment's headquarters. Handwritten extract from the Bendigo Advertiser 20/8/1910 Page 8. ''New Chum Mines. Unwatering of the deep levels is being carried on as expeditionsly as was expected by the authorities. In the last four days, the water has only been lowered 14 feet at the Victoria Quartz Mine. The water stood at the 3,226 feet level yesterday. The slow progress being made this week is no doubt due to the large quantity in the workings at some of the levels.'' From the Bendigo Advertiser 27/8/1910 Page 9. ''New Chum Mines. Very slow progress being made. At Victoria Quartz, the water was lowered 32 feet for the week, and is now at 3258 feet. New Chum Railway lowered the water 17 feet and the present level of the water is at 1796 feet. The Lazarus are raising water from 2157 feet. The water has ceased flowing into the New Chum and Victoria through the connecting level with the Lazarus Mine at about 2,500 feet. Ballarat Shool of Mines played an important role in training returned World War One servicemen via the Repatriation Vocational Training Scheme. Operating from 1917 to 1922, this scheme offered trades-based training to a large number of returned soldiers, depending on aptitude and level of disability. Many returned soldiers were unprepared for the workforce after demobilisation because of war injuries, or lost study opportunity during the years of their service. The Scheme was designed to give ex-servicemen the skills to find jobs, boost post-war economic recovery and add to social cohesion. It operated from 1917 to 1922. At the Council meeting held on Friday last, the 25th inst., the matter was further discussed and, at Colonel Bolton's suggestion, it was decided that it would be in the best interests of the movement, if application for admission were received through your association.
