The history of the scouting movement in Sunshine dates back to 1921, when Mrs Jessie McKay, the wife of George McKay helped to set up the 1st Sunshine Scout Troop at the Sunshine State School. By 1921 the scout troop had purchased the former Pentecostal Church in Martin Street and converted it into a scout hall. The Sunshine & District Historical Society Cottage Team held an exhibition to honour the history of scouting in the Sunshine District. The display included various archival documents and objects from the society's vast collection of scouting memorabilia from the district. The Sunshine Municipal Offices in Alexandra Avenue Sunshine opened in 1967. The building was designed by Gordon Stuart Warmington, a former Sunshine resident. The building was a substantial modernist civic structure with a distinctive boomerang / Y‑shaped plan. Its most iconic feature is the dramatic stained‑glass mural panel projecting over the main entrance featuring a modern sun motif referencing Sunshine’s industrial identity and the Sunshine Harvester Works logo. During the 1970's and 1980's additional wings and extension were added to the eastern side of the building. The building served as the City of Sunshine’s Town Hall until the municipality was abolished in 1994, when Sunshine merged into the newly created City of Brimbank. After the new Brimbank Community and Civic Centre in Hampshire Road opened in 2016, the Council moved its corporate and library operations to the new building. The Alexandra Avenue site was sold to developers in 2018 for $5.58 million. The building then fell into disrepair and was subject to a number of arsonist attacks, squatting, drug taking and other criminal activity. The building is protected by heritage overlays, particularly for its stained‑glass mural and original 1960s form. In November 2025, the City of Brimbank ordered the owners of the site to undertake some emergency demolition works to make the site safe. On 20 April 1908, at about 10:50 pm, a Melbourne‑bound Bendigo express ran into the rear of a Ballarat train standing at Sunshine Station. The collision occurred at the junction at Sunshine railway station, on the Bendigo and Ballarat lines in Sunshine, Victoria. The Sunshine Ladies Bowling Club was a key part of Sunshine’s community sporting life, founded to give local women their own space in the traditionally male-dominated world of bowls. It operated alongside the Sunshine Bowling Club and other local associations, reflecting the growth of women’s sport in Victoria during the mid‑20th century. The club was successful in winning many pennants throughout the years.
