These four photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio at Bendigo c1982. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The two sports featuring in these photos are touch football and tug-of-war. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965. This collection of 23 photos was most likely taken in Lithographic Squadron, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, in 1988. In photos .1P and .2P the technician is preparing a Chromalin map proof for supporting information that would be printed on the reverse side of a topographic map. This map was commonly referred to as a ‘snack’ map, with photos of edible indigenous plants and descriptions endemic to that region printed on the reverse side to assist soldiers living off the land in survival situations. The authoritative information was provided by Major Leslie James (Les) Hiddins aka ‘the Bush Tucker Man’ He is a retired Australian Army soldier and war veteran, who is best known for his love and knowledge of the Australian bush. See item 6190.6P for more information on the Chomalin proof production process. In the remaining photos, Print Troop’s technicians were most likely operating the Komoni, Planeta or Ultra-MAN-III offset printing presses, as well as working in the map despatch dock. Although these photos are not annotated most personnel are positively identified. There is an Alexis Harold Safstrom No 1723, 38th Batt 1st reinforcements then 59th Batt. He was WIA twice and discharged on 31.8.1919. There are two Woodheads with an initial L. This is possibly L.H.B Woodhead No 728, 8th Batt then late in the war 25th Batt. He was WIA twice coming home late 1918. The colour patch on the uniform is possibly 8th Batt. Safstrom was (born in Heathcote, enlisted Bendigo)which fits in with the donor of the items Mrs May Burns. Woodhead was from Mildura. The only connection could be that they were both in England at the same time the card was written. On November 11th 1926 the Shire of Eltham War Memorial Tower at Kangaroo Ground was opened. It is regarded as one of Melbourne’s most outstanding lookout towers. It commands a magnificent 360 degree panorama from Kinglake across the Diamond Valley to Macedon and the You Yangs. It is built on a peak which was once a volcano, 237 metres above sea level. After World War one a memorial cairn was erected on the site, and in 1925 a committee of public-minded citizens began to plan for a tower. Many generous donations of material and money were forthcoming so that in 1926 the Governor General Lord Stonehaven was able to unveil the plaque before a crowd of 500 people There was some concern in the 1960s when the Forests Commission wanted to build a firespotters cabin on the top. At first R.S.L. branches opposed the idea, but it was realised that this use could combine with its use as a tourist attraction, and would ensure its maintenance for the future. Today the Kangaroo Ground tower provides one of the best views around Melbourne and is a fitting memorial to those who died in two world wars. John Raymond (Ray) Blight enlisted on 19 July 1915. He was an electrical engineer, having studied at the Ballarat School of Mines. On 23 June 1916 Ray Blight disembarked at Marseilles. 3 February 1917 he was hospitalised with scabies. Ray Blight's next of kin was his mother, Mary Jane Blight of 116 Lyons Street South, Ballarat. James Leslie Sim enlisted on 13 July 1915, at which time he was an accountant. His next of kin was his father, Charles Robert Sim of Drummond Street North, Ballarat. On 23 June 1916 James Sim disembarked at Marseilles. A year later he received leave to the United Kingdom returning to France 2 weeks later. He received leave to Paris from 18 march 1918 to 4 April 1918. Sim was wounded on 1 June 1918.Two World War One soldiers in military uniform pose for a photograph. The two men are Lance Corporal Ray Blight and Lance Corporal Sim (both of Ballarat). On the back is a personal letter to Ballarat School of Mines Lecturer Daniel Walker. An amazing collection of original letters came to light 100 years after the events of Anzac in WW1, and written by Edwin Dutton Wood, [known as Dutton], named after his maternal family name, and was in the first wave of soldiers at Gallipoli and wrote 28 letters and cards. Written to his hopeful sweetheart who was sister to his best mate, Norman Talbett. Duttan wrote to his mate's mother to console her on the sad news that her son Norman had been killed at Gallipoli. This image was taken in Melbourne on Anzac Day 1986 where Des had taken place in the annual parade. The photo itself has had a long journey. It was donated to the Star Hotel in Yackandandah, Victoria by Des Martin in 1994. The hotel changed hands so many times that the custodian "Pip" Beatty felt it was best placed at the Light Horse Museum at Bandiana, Victoria. Its journey was complete when the photo was returned to the Wodonga Historical Society. Des Martin lived all his life in Wodonga, except for his years of service during World War Two. He was raised on the family property Aherlo in the Huon Creek Valley. In 1937 he joined the 8th Light Horse Regiment but in May 1940 led his Wodonga Troop into the 2/2nd Australian Pioneer Battalion. This Battalion saw service in Syria, Java, New Guinea and Borneo. After the war, Des returned to Aherlo and his horses. He was granted permission by the Victorian Racing Club to participate as an amateur “gentleman” rider. He became the first president of the Victorian Amateur Riders Association and founded the Murray Valley Hunt Club. Des also played a major role in Australia entering an equestrian team in the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 and served as a steward at that event. Des also wrote several publications including “Australia Astride” in 1959, a history of the Albury Racing Club – a Century of Racing, and an historical novel “Many a Mile”. He collaborated with R. M. Williams to develop “Hoofs and Horns” to become a national publication. From 1969 to 1973, Des Martin also wrote a column for the Border Mail newspaper. He was also a member of the RSL for almost 50 years and held several committee positions during that time. Des Martin died on 12 April 1995.This is a portrait of a significant member of the Wodonga community who made an outstanding contribution as a farmer, soldier, horseman, author and member of the RSL and other community organisations.A coloured photograph of Des Martin in full military uniform mounted on his horse.
