... ...Thomas Cherry...The article shows the importance of these outdoor outings for sailors after spending several months at sea. sailors seamen lhlg picnics sports dr cherry glen iris Thomas Cherry Sailors on Holiday Article Digital copy ...SAILORS ON HOLIDAY. . "A jolly party of Jack Tars mustered at the Missions to Seamen Institute yesterday at noon, and proceeded by train to Glen Iris, where they were the guests of Dr. and Mrs. Cherry. Liberal arrangements had been made for the delectation of these sons of the sea, to whom a sight of the tree , and grass and flowers were alone a real treat. A football match and a cricket match resulted in well contested struggles. Then followed tea of a substantial kind on the lawn, under the trees. As soon as this had been despatched, sports of various kinds— including a side-splitting "costume race"— were carried out with great vigor. The host and hostesses provided useful and ornamental articles as prizes, and these were distributed to the successful competi tors by Mr. Cherry. Then followed cheers for Dr. and Mrs. Cherry at the call of tire chaplains, Rev. A. E. Goldspink and Rev. W. F. Haire. Dr. Cherry replied by say ing that it gave him and M Cherry great pleasure to see the men enjoying them selves, and he hoped arrangements would be made for another such party ou an other occasion. Till a late hour at night the institutes on the Australian Wharf and at Port Melbourne were merry with crowds of tars."The article shows the importance of these outdoor outings for sailors after spending several months at sea.sailors, seamen, lhlg, picnics, sports, dr cherry, glen iris, thomas cherry -

E Cherry's other son Thomas (1861-1945) was also involved in the firm maintaining an interest for several years. ...The subject item is a good example of a large, hand-operated Bentwood box butter churn used to make up to 14 pounds of butter. It was made in Gisborne, Victoria, by the famous manufacturer, E. Cherry, and is known as an Improved Patent No.2 model probably dating from the late 1800s. The Cherry works specialised in making all types of butter churns and equipment for both domestic use on farms and small butter factories during the late nineteenth and early to mid. twentieth centuries. Milk was "separated" to retrieve the cream which was then beaten to make butter. E Cherry began making various models of Cherry butter churns in 1858, Edward Cherry migrated from Herefordshire England to Australia in 1855 with his wife Ann Appleby, nee Davis, and established a joinery workshop at Gisborne, Victoria. He began by making butter churns in his spare time and his product soon became popular allowing him to establish a viable business. A factory was established in 1875 and he started to make churns of all sizes including up to industrial scale. He exported his products to many countries around the world, Edward Cherry died in 1909 and the business was then run by his son George until he died in 1917. The process involved heating metal to a bright cherry red and shaping it on an anvil, which included features like a flat table and a horn for different shaping needs. Thomas Pearce was born in Cornwall in 1850, the son of a blacksmith, and married Mary Sobey in 1871. He also ran the Five Pilchards Inn, according to the Cornish Census. Like many Cornish people in the late 19th century, Pearce migrated for mining opportunities, arriving in Bendigo in 1889. Pearce worked as a blacksmith at various mines in Bendigo upon arrival. In 1898, he became the blacksmith at Fortuna, a prominent estate owned by George Lansell. Pearce is best known for creating the ornate iron entry gates at Fortuna, showcasing his skill and creativity. It is noted that he began crafting the gates without formal drawings, relying on his vision and expertise. Pearce retired from Fortuna in 1923 at age 73.He and his wife celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in 1931, marking a long and accomplished life.Fortuna Articles - "Ironwork to test the mettle" Sept 25 2009 The Bendigo Weekly Discover Bendigo by James Lerk This item contains the following: 11217.48a Black and white photo of the Fortuna metal gate in Chum Street 11217.48b Black and white photo of Thomas Pearce , blacksmith, in 1931 at the time of his diamond wedding 11217.48c Part of Page 18 - Fortuna Articles - "Ironwork to test the mettle"non-fictionbendigo, fortuna, george lansell, james lerk, thomas pearce blacksmith
