The signalman had two roles. Before police controlled the intersection, he used signals and flags to guide the gripmen through the intersection. Illustration of Driver John (Jack) O'Callaghan and a conductor at a terminus or short working with tram W 342. Has the dates regarding the tramcar's working life on the top of the illustration. Advised by Donor that Jack was a "tram employee" between 1919 and 1922, a Gripman - 1924 - 1925 and a Motorman 1928 - 1931. After that he was a signalman. The photo was possibly taken at an opening of new track event. Scanned from an original photograph by the donor and sent to the depot when visiting about organising a tour. Tram crew in full uniform of the era, driver holding the controller and brake handles. Digital image of "Electric Tram Driver's Certificate No. 407", issued to D. (Daniel) Patience, signed by G. Barker Instructor, with "A. W. Murdoch" stamp authorising the document, dated 23/3/1929. Born in Avoch Scotland, was a police constable there, before emigrating to Melbourne. Was a cable tram Gripman in the Albert Park Area. Became an electric tram driver, then signalman at St Kilda Junction and trained as an inspector, but did not like the green uniform. Ran in the Stawell Gift of 1925 (injured foot during the race), was a Navigator on Transport RAF/RAAF flights during WW2. War memorabilia to the War Memorial Canberra. The photographs taken from the Franklin St signal box in Swanston St shows the view of the signal men and traffic issues. In the first photograph, tram 498 (University, route 4D) has turned in front of tram 422? waiting for a passenger to board before travelling south in Swanston St. A motor car is threading between the two trams. In the view is a sign for Havelock Tobacco and an Ansett Pioneer bus waiting outside the Ansett Airways/Pioneer building. The second photo shows the number of trams in Swanston St and the general traffic using the intersection and the workload or the number of trams to be managed by the signalman. Photograph shows uniformed MTOC signalman standing under a canopy operating two large levers (which may be the reason the newspaper mistakenly described him as a switchman). He stands under a canopy supported by poles with a partial curtain at the rear along with his overcoat. The canopy was located on the footpath on the southeast corner of the intersection of Collins and Swanston Streets. This was the busiest cable tramway intersection in Melbourne and one of the busiest for pedestrian and vehicle traffic. The tram tracks crossed each other at right angles with no curved tracks to permit turns. The signalman's job was twofold: to directed which trams had right of way by use of mechanical signals and to depress the Collins Street cable so that the upward incline did not cause the cable to rise out of the slot onto the roadway. The depression gear was located under both Collins Street tracks adjacent to the Town Hall and was only released momentarily to allow a Collins Street tram to pass over it. This was a demanding job requiring constant vigilance: working with the policeman controlling the intersection, trams approaching from four directions, horse and motor traffic and pedestrians. The signalman's rules provided a specific order of steps each time the signals and depression gear were reset, which occurred many times per hour. He was also authorised to stop trams with the use of his whistle and a red hand lamp and to report gripmen who disobey his directions. Traffic lights were gradually introduced to Melbourne from 1928 after cable trams were replaced in Swanston Street and just before they were replaced in Collins Street. Lydiard St level crossing with an Electric Supply Co. of Victoria tram, northbound to Gregory St in Lydiard St North. The tram has three equal windows and is most likely one of the ex-Sydney electric trams that were sold to Ballarat. A number is not discernable. Note the ladies sitting on the outside seats.
