In the late 1990s, Arthritis Victoria undertook a challenge to increase its membership. Consequently, a telemarketing team was engaged to help reach the proposed membership target. In the late 1990s to early 2000s, the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV) held a Tai Chi class as part of its Arthritis Self Management program for exercise leaders. The class was held at AFV's headquarters in Elsternwick. Vathi is the main town on the Island of Ithaca, built around the natural harbour. The architecture of the town shows the influence of Venetians who ruled the island from c1500 till 1797, following which the island was ruled briefly by the French and then became a British Protectorate until unification with Greece in 1864. The original venetian style buildings were mainly destroyed in the devastating earthquakes of 1953. However, the style of building has been retained and building regulations on the island require all new buildings to adhere to the traditional architecture of the island. A coloured panoramic view of the port of Vathi. The buildings have been built along a narrow strip of coastal land at the foot of the mountain range.

The mandolin orchestra was from Ithaca where that instrument along with the guitar is a favourite. The cantada style music of Ithaca is very lyrical and reflects the Venetian influence on the Ionian islands. Evriklia Kolaitou pictured in the middle row on the far right with the guitar. Evriklia later settled in Melbourne. She married to Spiros Kallinikos. Ithaca has experienced various cultural influences as it was under Venetian, French and British rule for periods of time prior to unification with Greece in 1864.A sepia photograph of a mandolin orchestra photographed in front of a building.
