I conceive my work as unfinished fragments of memory and childhood rituals, and through the art making process, I build and then peel back the layers of these memories and early influences, to reveal my personal dreamscape. Through the fusion of colour, texture, mark making and rubbing back, my intuitive rendering of the media creates layers that like memories, can be stacked up, hidden, peeled away, rubbed out, etched back in, and the process of layering and building up of a tactile textured surface, reflects memory itself; with its elusiveness and hard to grasp impressions that are more like ingrained watermarks. As I work, layering the surface then taking it back; rebuilding, adding marks and burnishing back, I feel into the textures, and through this tactile rendering I often discover something unintended and the end result is not quite how I perceived it in the planning. Perhaps something of a happy accident, which again reflects the arbitrariness of memory. I see my artworks less as paintings, but assemblages, with the layering technique creating a sculptural effect that reflects my great interest in the landscape and its beautiful and varied colours, shapes and textures. Part of my process is to take long drives into the country where I grew up, photographing along the way, to create a visual documentary that then informs my practice. The wide paddocks of the Victorian wheatbelt, beneath the endless blue of the horizon evokes very early memories so that a singular Bullock, a fencepost, a hay roll or corrugated iron wall, is so uniquely resonant to me, I am compelled to create this in my work. My connection to the land, to farming practices; the poplars, oaks and elm trees of my childhood holidays, is a mindscape that I return to again and again as I try to recreate that early sense of wonder, love and familiarity, grief and joy, that forms my unique vision. Embroidered by the donor's Grandmother Veronica Constable. Veronica was born in 1904 in Culgoa and died in 1976. Veronical lived on a soldier settlement property in the wimmera at Wycheproof where the family farmed wheat and cattle. The table cloth was stored in a suitcase with other linen in her mothers wardrobe since 1970s or earlier. Donor doesnt remember her grandmother embroidering so probably dates pre 1950's. The damaged building in the photograph is the former Diggers Rest Hotel which was built in on that site in 1854 It was a popular place during the 1970s Sunbury Pop Festivals as it was the closest hotel to the Pop Festival site. It was partly destroyed by a suspicious fire on 30th October 2008, which left the walls and chimney intact but the roof caved in. Since then there have been moves by the local community to either rebuild and reopen the venue or to demolish it.The Diggers Rest has been one of the few early surviving hotels that were built along the former Mount Alexander Road, now Calder Highway, during the 1850s gold rush years.This a non-digital coloured photograph of a double storey hotel building, which has been damaged by fire. The former blue-stone Bulla Store and Post Office was damaged by fire in September 1992. Unfortunately it was not restored despite its heritage listing and the fire-damaged building was finally demolished. The two men are Alan McKenzie and Trevor Dunn, who are cousins and long-time residents of the Sunbury - Bulla area. This is a more recent photograph than entry P0854.The two storey house was built for Dr.William Faulkner in 1911. It is opposite the intersection of Evans and Macedon Streets. As well as the house, a garage was also built for the doctor's car, along with smaller building for the chauffeur. Dr. Faulkner was one of the first people in Sunbury to own a car. Doctor Faulkner lived at Ardcloney until he died in 1922. Over the years it had other owners and in the early 2000s, it was taken over by the State government and is now a day-care hospital. The Mayor of Hume City Council, Jack Ogilvie, was addressing local 12th December 1999 in the grounds of the former Bulla Roads Board building. St. Mary's Church of England is adjacent to the Rose Garden. Alister Clark, a former Bulla resident and a rosarian, developed many different species of roses at his Glenara property.
