Victorian Railways uniform jacket in navy blue woollen cloth. It has straight sleeves, a standing collar with brown piping and rounded fronts. There are two set- in pockets on the fronts and a breast pocket in the right front lining. The body is lined with a glazed black twill and the sleeves with cream cotton with a longitudinal brown pinstripe. The three pockets are lined with heavy tan twill. There are five metal buttons embossed with a crown and "VR". There is a black cotton tape loop inside the collar.In the breast pocket, in purple ink the initials "GL" or "GI". In the right sleeve lining, an unreadable stamp in purple ink. In the left sleeve lining, pencilled "XB 338" or "X13 338". Photograph shows Dummy or Grip Car on run-out track outside Brunswick Car Shed in Sydney Road, Brunswick. Lined up in the foreground along the side of the Dummy are approx 20 tram crew and other staff, most in assorted uniforms with unbuttoned jackets. While the photo's reproduction is poor, the destination board reads 'H. B. Railway' (Hobson's Bay Railway) once located at the Flinders and Elizabeth Streets terminus. This early railway became part of the Victorian Railways in 1878, well before the opening of the Brunswick cable line in 1887 and this photograph c1890. The Motorman on the left has a Motorman badge and number "26". Shows the style of the VR uniform caps. The conductor though wearing a tie is not a uniform issue style and has a finger shield on his thumb to help with issuing tickets.
