The fountain was erected at the entrance to the Village Green in Sunbury adjacent to the corner of O'Shanassy and Brook Streets in 2017. It replaced a former one that had been damaged. In past times a fountain was erected in the middle of the intersection of O'Shanassy, Stawell and Brook Streets but was relocated to a memorial reserve within the Village Green.For many years a fountain stood near the present one and has been feature in the Sunbury township. In May 1972 an alternative lifestyle festival gathering was staged on the Sunbury Village Green area. The Main Street of Sassafras c1952 showing Mechanics Institute at left under snow. Note the hedge around the area that is now the Village Green. At the time of the photo the land belonged to Eva Shugg where she ran holiday flats called St Annes. Eva Shugg sold her house to Max Dower to extend his nursery in the 1970s and built a new home around the corner on Mountain Highway. At this time she donated part of her remaining land to form a Village Green. This is a photograph of St. Mary's Anglican Church in Sunbury, which is located in O'Shanassy Street in Sunbury. The congregation celebrated the official opening of their church in 1867. Services are still conducted in the church. A large gum tree, which was growing ing the Village Green was shedding its branches and as it was growing in a public area and in front of a kindergarten the tree was felled as it was dying. In October 2014 a large diseased gum tree was chopped down in the Village Green recreation area and in front of the St. Andrews Uniting Church Hall and kindergarten, which is the building in the background. The Sunbury Memorial Hall was originally the Sunbury Mechanics Institute, until after World War 1. Over the years it has been the site for many different functions from social to local government meetings. The parkland in the foreground was Stawell Street, which was closed off to become included in the Village Green passive recreation area in 1979. St. Mary's Anglican Church is in the middle distance.Many social gatherings have taken place in both the hall and the Village Green over the years and is used constantly today. The photograph was taken at the Sunbury Fair possibly in 1977 when Bert Kelly, who is the man in the foreground, was the Shire President. Every year in March the Shire of Bulla held the fair in which community groups participated in a parade in the morning and the afternoon was given over to entertainment by local groups and displays on the Village Green. The lady, wearing a dark patterned dress and standing immediately behind Bert Kelly is Shirley McKerrow. Mrs Mommsen is standing next to him and the young man 2nd from extreme right is Graham Gibb. The parkland is part of the Village Green, which is surrounded by Barkly, Brook and Macedon Streets in Sunbury. In the foreground is the temperature controlled glass building which houses the restored Armstrong twelve pounder gun that the Clarke family gifted to the people of Sunbury in 1922. For many years it stood in the open at the junction of Macedon, Stawell and Barkly Streets until 1970. The Starkie Water Fountain is on the LHS of the image. The cream building in the middle distance is the Memorial Hall, formerly the Mechanics Institute, built in 1885 and the red brick building is the former Sunbury State School. The Sunbury War Memorial is situated on a triangular section of land which was once at the intersection of Barkly and Stawell Streets. The precinct is also the site of the Rupertswood Gun and the Starkey Fountain. Copies of historic photos from Harefield during World War 1. They are of the funerals of a soldier and Nurse Dickinson. They were both buried in the Military Cemetery in Harefield. During World War 1 the Australian Auxiliary Hospital No.1 was stationed at Harefield Park in Harefield, UxBridge, Middlesex UK. 111 Australian soldiers and one nurse from the hospital are buried at St Mary's Church, Harefield. This became an Australian Military Cemetery with individual headstones and an obelisk and arch. The headstones which are of a scroll design unique amongst Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries were chosen by the staff and patients at the hospital. The arch was erected by the CWGC. Anzac Day services are held there and the local school became involved with the headmaster, Mr Jefferies, bringing the school children to lay flowers on every grave and attend the service on Anzac Day. This started in 1921 and has continued until at least 2021. One school child who attended was Mr Alf Young, he made contact with Legacy in the 1990s and sent photos of the Anzac Day Services and the cemetery. Legacy responded by sending Australian flags for the school children and also Legatee John Cohen met with Mr Young when in London. Melbourne Legacy staff member Susie Howard also visited Mr Young and the cemetery in 1995. Mr Young provided historical photos and information of the area to Legacy. He was featured in the widows' newsletter The Answer many times and his death was announced in The Answer in April 1997, he was 85. Many of the photos he provided were labelled as coming from Mr R G Neil, Photographic historian from Harefield. The crowd are gathered around the former Rupertswood gun which originally was a piece of field equipment used by the Rupertswood Battery. The Clarke family eventually gave it the the residents of Sunbury. The Starkie drinking fountain was erected to commemorate the work done by Joseph Starkie to formation of the Sunbury Waterworks Trust in 1905. This later led to the establishment of a water supply system in Sunbury. Originally the fountain was at the intersection of O'Shanassy and Brook Streets. As the shopping centre expanded, the fountain was moved to a reserve in the Village Green. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.Black and white photograph of a group of men relaxing with a cup of tea. The Sunbury Memorial Hall was originally the Mechanic's Institute which was built on the present site in 1885. The hall was remodelled in 1922 and renamed the Sunbury Memorial Hall. The building was used until the 1960s as the meeting place by the Shire of Bulla Council. The man photograph in a garden is Joseph David Starkie, who was a Bulla Shire councillor for more than twenty years and during that time he was elected Shire President four times. He was also a member of the Sunbury Waterworks Trust and served as the chairman from 1905 - 1908. While serving on the water board he was instrumental in Sunbury gaining a permanent water supply. A drinking fountain has been erected on a reserve at the Village Green to honour the arrival of the permanent water supply to the town. The installation of a permanent water supply benefitted the town and contributed to a more reliable rail service as steam trains refilled their tanks with water at Sunbury Station. The 'Meeise' French car is parked outside the former Mechanics Institute Hall in Stawell Street, Sunbury. J Eadie was responsible for the building of the hall in 1885 and the foundation stone was laid by Lady Janet Clarke. The former Shire of Bulla conducted their council meetings in the hall from 1923 until 1956 when new offices were built in Macedon Street. Later the RSL took over occupancy of the hall and it became known as the Memorial Hall. PLANNING Minister Rob Maclellan and Nillumbik Shire president Robert Marshall have both praised an innovative housing development on a historic property east of Eltham's town centre. Both were present at the launch of the Kinloch Gardens development, where 12 new double and triple storey homes will be built along a private road in the gardens of Kinloch, a mansion set on 2.4ha in Arthur St. About 100 people attended the launch. Cr Marshall likened Kinloch Gardens to the Woodridge Estate at Eltham, which he said provided housing on small allotments while protecting much of the tree canopy, and "showed how a suburb can be built". He said Kinloch could easily have been subdivided, with a court running up the middle of the development, but the owners, the Jelbart family, opted instead for a private road on the property, sweeping around a common pond and 'village green'. ''This is a perfect example of what can be achieved in urban planning,'' he said.
