BRIT and La Trobe University ...Merle Hall Collection: Rosalind Park Creative Village Bendigo Project Pamphlet for Rosalind Park Lookout - two copies. One side of the pamphlet has a layout image of the five sections of the mosaic and the poppet head base. The sections are numbers 1 to 5 Section 1: A stylised representation of the main Bendigo Goldfield based on a geological plan (Publish in 1992). It shows the lines of reef, including the famous Hustlers, Garden Gully and New Chum. Section 2: A typical cross section of the Bendigo Goldfields Section 3: The mine layout shown in this design features part of the Garden Gully line of reef. Section 4: Shown here is the Iron Bark mine on the Sheepshead reef. It has an interesting pattern of drives, stopes and winzes. Section 5: In this section the artist uses gold as her inspiration. The larger mosaic shows quartz veins winding through the earth containing gold in its various forms. The smaller mosaic represents the atomic structure of gold. It shows the the nucleus, the six shells of the atom, their electrons and orbits. The other side of the pamphlet describes the background of the community arts project, the artist, and volunteer workers, also notes mentioning the Bendigo community history. It also lists the donors for funding and business's that supported the project, with special thanks to Eric Wilkinson - Geolpogical advoser, the students and staff from Camp Hill, St Killians and Violet Street primary schools. Newspaper cutting titled Long Gully school has a proud record. Paper dated Wednesday, February 14, 1990. Article was Community Focus with Maurie McDonald. The school was holding a reunion on Sunday, April 1. Article mentions some history of the school, distances from other schools and the meetings and a petition to get the school. Eventually a tender was accepted from Crawford Brothers, Bath Hotel, Sandhurst, for 2745 pounds, for the erection of the new building with an extra 50 pound for white brick facings. The new school was opened by the Minister of Public Instruction on January 15, 1879. There is a photo of the school in the article. There are also two pink photo copies of the article. A faded blue document titled "Bendigo Teachers' College Graduation Ceremony 1959". Also on the front page is a list of the staff working at the college. On the inside page is the "Significance of the Ceremony" and "Order of Ceremony". The welcome to visitors was given by Mr. F. M. Courtis and the 'Graduation Book' was presented to Mr. A. L. Harris by Miss J. C. Burnett. Mr. C. L. Barker made the final call of the 1959 roll. Congratulations were offered by Cr. H. W. Snell J.P., Cr. P.V. Joan Mary Bray was born 6/9/1915 in Brisbane, the daughter of Herbert Edward Bray and his wife Grace (nee Shepherd) who married in Wisbech, Cambridge in 1892. The family lived at 5 Barton Street from the late 1920s. She completed her primary schooling at Auburn Primary by travelling there by the little black bus along Canterbury Road. She then went on to Mont Albert Central School and Melbourne Girls High. Locally she belonged to the 1st Surrey Hills Girl Guide Company at Holy Trinity Church. She trained as a nurse at Epworth Hospital and in 1941 served with the army at Gaza Hospital in the Middle East, then in New Guinea. From 1944 until the end of the war she was in Bougainville. Her mother died in Surrey Hills 29/9/1945 and her father moved to Hawthorn; he died in 1955. She had 3 older sisters: Eveline Grace (1893-1978) m Eric Benson; Violet Constance (1894-1983 - ? Sister Constance in mother’s death notice); Dorothy Maud (1896 - ? Sister Ursula in mother’s death notice). After the war she was a RSSL nurse, Matron of St Gabriel’s Baby Home in Balwyn, then Director of Nursing at the Royal Eye and Ear Hospital, East Melbourne. She resigned to be married.
