The Redex Reliability Trial 1953 -The first Redex round-Australia reliability trial covered of 6,500 miles (10,500 km), and had a first prize of £1,000. It attracted both amateur and professional drivers in a variety of cars. The route passed through Brisbane, Rockhampton, Townsville, Darwin, Alice Springs, Adelaide and Melbourne before returning to Sydney and attracted much public interest. At the time the idea of driving huge distances around the country in ordinary cars was novel and the logistics were challenging. In many parts of the country there simply wasn’t adequate accommodation or suitably located refuelling stops. The Shell Company facilitated the race by placing petrol dumps along the 5000 km route between Townsville and Adelaide. The race began at the Sydney Showground on 30 August when 192 cars left at three-minute intervals. Of the twenty top finalists, two thirds were sponsored. Ken Tubman and John Marshall won the trial in a Peugeot 203. A black & white photo taken in Whitehorse Road, Mont Albert during the 1953 Redex Trial as a Volkswagen is passing 688 Whitehorse Road on the extreme left. The VW appears to have advertising on its panels indicating it was a competitor in the trial. On the far side of the road is a Morris Minor with a hatted man sitting on the bonnet. Displays set up on the Eltham Common in front of the relocated (1964) Shillinglaw Cottage, prior to the construction of the new Eltham Library in 1993. Eltham Town Park on the opposite side of Panther Place was renamed by Council in 1987 to Alistair Knox Park despite significant community objections. Many residents continued to refer to the park as Eltham Town Park for some years afterwards. View from Grace Mitchell's shop at the corner of Mount Pleasant Road and Main Road. Grace Mitchell was probably best known for her Eltham shop at the corner of Mt Pleasant Road and Main Road. Grace's memories covered many local identities who were patrons of her shop between 1954 and 1971. From the elevated position of her shop and home Grace was able to view a varied passing parade of Eltham events from ERSILAC, Easter and Eltham Festival parades passing on their way to Eltham Lower Park, circuses in Wingrove Park (then Bremner’s Reserve), roadworks and other happenings. Bremner's Reserve was renamed Wingrove Park c.1970 This photo was from a series of images presented by Grace Mitchell at a Society talk 10 March 1993 on the theme of “My Eltham”. Alistair Knox had one of the first VW Beetles in Eltham; perhaps the one shown is his. This model has a large rear window, first introduced in 1958. The Holden ute could be an FC or FE. B&W photo of Ronald McDonald at Hermon's business in Dandenong on the occasion of the opening of McDonalds in Dandenong. Photo shows a group of people outside Hermon's Refuelling Station (a brick building with a shop and a workshop). A woman stands, holding the hands of two children, aged about seven. A person dressed as Ronald McDonald sits on the back of a sports car. Bill Hermon and a mechanic stand further along. There is a driver in the car. According to Lyn McGillivray, daughter of Bill and Jean, "It was hilarious! Mum & Dad were asked if Ronald McDonald could get changed in our premises. They were in awe that this 'big-wig' would want/need to dress there for the short journey up the street to the new restaurant. I think it was us kids (young adults then) who set them straight!"
