Burroughs Adding Machines Ltd of Detroit Michigan was the first company to occupy a factory at Strathleven. During the European reconstruction in the late 1940's Burroughs built a major new factory at Strathleven in Scotland, initially to assemble machines from US-made parts and later to manufacture the full product range for the British and Commonwealth markets. Most of the post-war calculators and portables found in Australia are from the Strathleven factory.This manually operated calculator predates the the rise of the modern computer.A manually operated Burrough's adding machine. Alfred Milner, 1st Viscount Milner was a British statesman and colonial administrator. He played an influential role in the formulation of foreign and domestic policy from mid 1890s to early 1920s. In 1897he became High Commissioner for South Africa and Governor of Cape Colony. He pushed the Transvaal Republic to war, oversaw the war and organised the reconstruction after the war. Milner left South Africa in 1905 after being involved in many of the changes that took place while he was there. Honours Awarded: Companion of the Order of the Bath (1894); Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (1895); Knight GrandCross of the Order of St Michael and St George (1897); Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (1901); Knight of the Order of the Garter (1921). After the end of the first World War the Victorian Railways considered an extension of the railhead across the river at Orbost, and in 1922 a new timber and steel girder structure, a joint Country Roads Board — Victorian Railways venture, was built and completed at a cost of £41,000 (the steel girders came from the Flinders Street viaduct reconstruction). Subsequently it was decided not to take the railway across the river, and the bridge has only been used by road traffic. The town of Vire is on a rocky promontory above the Vire River, situated in the south-west of the Calvados department of Lower Normandy, about half way between Caen (north-east of Vire) and Mont-Saint-Michel (to the south-west). Since 2016 the town has been part of the commune called Vire-Normandie. The town suffered quite heavily during bombardments at the end of the Second World War, and much reconstruction and renovation took place in the decade that followed the end of the war. Rick AMOR (1948- ) Born Frankston, Victoria After completing a Certificate of Art at the Caulfield Institute of Art in 1865 Rick Amor studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne from 1966 to 1968. Amor has held over 60 solo exhibitions, and has worked in Barcelona, New York and London. In 1999 Rick Amor became the first official Australian war artist since the Vietnam War. He was appointed by the Australian War Memorial to document the devastated land in East Timor, and the reconstruction efforts of peacekeepers. Professor David Caro OAM was Chancellor of the University of Ballarat for two terms, between 1998 and 2004. His contributions to academia and science have recognised on a national and international global scale. His appointments include Officer in the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and Officer in the Order of Australia (AO). This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007. Programme - Document, Exhibition of War Sketches by Lieutenant Daryl Lindsay (H34), 1919
A programme of an art exhibition of 77 pieces of artwork by Lieutenant Daryl Lindsay in 1919. The Introduction was written by the war correspondent CEW Bean. Mr Lindsay's connection with Legacy is not known. A legatee Ray W___ donated this copy of the exhibition programme and the original of the cover print and a watercolour 'The road to Poperinghe' to Legacy in October 1984. At one stage they were in the Comradeship Room. As at December 2019 the original of the cover print is on loan to the Shrine of Remembrance and on display. The caption at the Shrine reads," 'Soldier'1918 by Daryl Lindsay (1889-1976). Daryl Lindsay was appointed an official war artist in 1917. He had worked as a batman for his brother-in-law Will Dyson, also an official war artist, from the end of 1916. Lindsay's sketches documented the facial injuries of soldiers, in order to assist then plastic surgeons undertaking facial reconstruction at Queen Mary's Hospital in Sidcup, Kent. His artistic skills led to his appointment as an official medical artist at the hospital in 1918." The notation H34 in red pen shows that it was part of an early archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A soldier put together artwork about World War One and exhibited it in Melbourne in 1919. Later two of his artworks were donated to Legacy.Dark brown cover with cream insert of a sketch of a solider. This photograph shows the second major bridge across the Snowy River at Orbost. The current Snowy River bridge is the fourth to provide a crossing to the township of Orbost. The first, in 1891, lasted just two years before it succumbed to flood waters. The bridge in this photograph was built in the 1920s as a road and rail bridge, and was again partly washed away by flood waters in 1934. After the end of the first World War the Victorian Railways considered an extension of the railhead across the river at Orbost, and in 1922 a new timber and steel girder structure, a joint Country Roads Board — Victorian Railways venture, was built and completed at a cost of £41,000 (the steel girders came from the Flinders Street viaduct reconstruction). Subsequently it was decided not to take the railway across the river, and the bridge was only used by road traffic. It was severely battered by floods during its life. and after the 1971 floods was eventually replaced by the current bridge in 1975. Each copy consists of a chapter, one page titled "Early History", five pages titled "Part 1 - Horse Trams - Ballarat 1887 - 1905, Sebastopol 1893 - 1912, Ballarat East Nil" Notes on the construction of the tramway, opening, personalities, Julien Battery tram, and half a page titled "Bits of Interest". The 3rd chapter, 3 pages, titled "Part 2 - Electric Trams - Ballarat 1905, Ballarat East, Sebastopol 1912". Notes the early power supply history in Ballarat, opening of the electric routes, (conversion of horse trams to electric), and the purchase of new trams ex Melbourne 1930. Chapter ends with 3 short paragraphs notes on the SEC taking over, Conductresses during the war and reconstruction. Author - unknown - possibly the SEC, Les Denmead and others - notes the scrubber car still in service in 1969? Blue Voting paper with Borough of Tarnagulla printed at the top. Candidates' Names are George Barlow, Thomas Bayliss, John Beynon, Thomas Henderson, William Herd Voting directions at the end of page. White paper titled Ballot Paper School District of the Borough of Tarnagulla. Candidates' Names are Henry Charles Bristol, Robert Harrison Burstall, Edward Buckley, Thomas Comrie, James Clouston, George Minto, and Thomas Scorer. Voting Directions printed at the bottom of page. Printed by John Ferres, Government Printer, Melbourne. Another piece of paper has Mr Cra? Goldfield's Historical Society written on it. Typed on another piece of paper is: These two ballot papers were found in the Tarnagulla Town Hall before its reconstruction this year. Apart from a few records in possession of the Goldfields Historical Society the Tarnagulla Borough Records were pulped during the war. The ballot paper for the School District is an election for a School Board of Advice in 1873 (the first election under the Act). The Voting paper is for the Borough Council, date unknown but it was not (underlined) the first election. With compliments of the Goldfields Historical Society per their Curator John J.
