These eight photos of the Army Survey Regiment’s Tug-of-War Team were most likely taken at Simpson Barracks, Watsonia in circa 1989. There is no information available on why the unit sent the team to Melbourne, the occasion, and the winner of this contest. It may have been a military athletics carnival held to commemorate Australia’s First Fleet bi- centenary, noting there was other members of Army Svy Regt on the bus who were not part of this team. The team’s coach was WO1 Ken Slater. Tug-of-War contests were very popular for the competitors and spectators, as they were often held at the Regiment as a component of inter-squadron athletics competitions, Flag Day verses the School of Military Survey, Bones Day verses the RAAF’s the School of Radio and a component of regimental training.These eight photos of the Army Survey Regiment’s Tug-of-War Team were most likely taken at a competition held at Simpson Barracks, Watsonia circa 1989. The photographs were on 35mm negative film and were scanned at 96 dpi. A DVD of people at a reunion for Junior Legatees that joined Legacy in the 1940s. It was held at Watsonia Barracks on 29 July 2007. It was part of a collection of Legacy items from Valma Hutchinson (nee Wigg), a former junior legatee. This document is the result of research into the history of Watsonia Barracks (now Simpson Barracks) by GHS member Marilyn Smith. It details the origin of street names in the surrounding area and includes biographical information on those after whom the streets were named. Updated December 2016.The Watsonia Barracks has been in use since WW2 and is today home to the Defence Force School of Signals. It was built on the property formerly owned by Ainslie Meares. In 1951, surrounding land was purchased for the extension of the barracks. The suburb of Yallambie was formerly part of the Barracks. From an article in the Widows' Newsletter in July 1991 it is a Grand Reunion at Watsonia Army Barracks in May for former Junior Legatees. Over 350 people attended. There were games for children, spit roasts and the renewing of friendships between former Junior Legatees and the Legatees. An article in the Herald Sun on Friday 17 May 1991 promoted the event using a photo of Ron Barassi and L/ Chas Munnerley mentioned the reunion was Sunday 19 May (item 01529). An Oral History Project - An Australia Remembers New Work Project funded by the Department of Employment, Education and Training. Sponsored by Northern Metropolitan College of TAFE. The Australia Remembers 1945-1995 campaign was a pageant of events commemorating the end of World War II. 34 chapters include reminiscences from 34 men and women mainly from the Watsonia Returned Servicemen's League recording their memories of the war years for the benefit of the [Shire of] Diamond Valley community. One photo of Ron Barassi and Chas Munnerley with the Legacy Torch. From a newspaper article we see that this was a photo used to promote Legacy in May 1991. They were promoting a Junior Legatee Reunion that was to be held on 18th May 1991 at Watsonia Barracks. The article also mentions that the hope was the reunion would see some former junior legatees help with the work of Legacy. There was 24,000 widows being looked after by only 1,000 legatees whose numbers were dwindling. Ron Barassi gave a lot of his time to help promote Legacy in many ways. He was a Legacy Boy after his father died in Tobruk in 1941. Photographs of handicap dependents at enjoying music and dance from a military band that featured in an edition of the Answer. There were frequent events and activities organised by Melbourne Legacy for handicapped dependents. The Junior Legatees, with many mums and friends of Legacy went to the Defence Force School at Watsonia Barracks and were treated to a performance by the 2/10 Medium Regiment Band. The Bandmaster was WOI Dave Farrell and there was a surprise visit by a clown. According to the article "Former JL Sharon Taylor, now a corporal with 'Visits Protocol and Ceremonial' at the Defence Centre - Melbourne, gave a moving tribute to Legacy in recognition of the support she had received as a young girl. Junior Legatees were given an opportunity to play some of the musical instruments and the enjoyment is evident as the photos show."
