This junior football shield was given by James Fairbairn (1897-1940), a prominent Western District pastoralist, aviator, local politician and Federal Cabinet minister. He was killed in a Canberra air disaster in 1940. The shield shows that several football teams, including West End, Russells Creek and East Warrnambool won the shield in the 1930s. In 1936 the shield was won outright by West End Football Club. This club, founded in the late 19th century, played in Western District Leagues until 1946 when it joined the newly-formed Warrnambool District Football League. In 1971 it merged with the Allansford Football Club to become the West End-Allansford Club and in 2002 the name ceased to exist when the team name was changed back to Allansford Football Club. This trophy is of interest as a football trophy given over 80 years ago and as a memento of the Warrnambool West End Football Club, a team no longer existing. The sport of Australian football has been, and still is, highly prominent in the Warrnambool district with football first played in the town in 1861. This is a wooden shield with nine silver-coloured metal discs affixed to the shield with metal pins. Eight of these discs are shield-shaped. All of the discs have etched inscriptions. The discs are somewhat stained and the wooden shield has traces of paint on it. There is a wire attached to the back of the shield for hanging on a wall. ‘Warrnambool Junior Football League’ ‘Junior Challenge Shield presented by J.V. Fairbairn Esq. These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1988, feature past and present members of the Sunshine Ladies Cricket Club gathered at Dempster Park, Phoenix Street, Sunshine North. The Sunshine Ladies Cricket Club was one of the early women's cricket teams active throughout the Sunshine district, including Sunshine, Albion and Braybrook, during the mid-twentieth century. The club emerged during a period of growing participation by women in organised sport across Victoria, when local sporting associations, schools, factories and community organisations were increasingly providing opportunities for women to compete and engage in recreational activities. The club contributed to the development of women's cricket in Melbourne's western suburbs and formed an important part of the district's sporting and social history.6864.01 - Sunshine Ladies Cricket Team Past And Present Players 1988 Photographs (Advocate 713).JPG 6864.02 - Sunshine Ladies Cricket Team Past And Present Players 1988 Photographs (Advocate 713).JPG 6864.03 - Sunshine Ladies Cricket Team Past And Present Players 1988 Photographs (Advocate 713).JPGsunshine ladies cricket club, dempster park, phoenix street, sunshine north

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 2000, feature Lester Ellis, known as “The Master Blaster” and a former World Boxing Champion, as he prepared for a return to competitive fighting through the sport of kickboxing. The images capture Ellis during his comeback under the guidance of renowned martial arts and kickboxing trainer John Scida, whose coaching helped establish many champion fighters throughout Melbourne's western suburbs. Ellis's move into kickboxing marked a new chapter in the career of one of Australia's most celebrated boxing champions. The pair were training in the Sunshine Police Youth and Citizens Club located at 52A Sun Crescent, Sunshine. John Scida was a prominent martial arts, kickboxing and Muay Thai instructor in Melbourne's western suburbs. Beginning as a Zen Do Kai instructor in Sunshine during the 1970s, he became one of the region's leading kickboxing coaches, later establishing Ultimate Gym in St Albans. Through his coaching, he trained numerous champion fighters and helped develop the local martial arts and combat sports community. Lester's career in kick boxing only lasted briefly before going back to professional boxing where he fought his last fight against Anthony Mundine on the 15th July 2002. Anthony Mundine knocked Ellis down in the first round and, during the third round, Ellis's trainer and brother, Keith Ellis, stopped the fight by throwing in the towel to prevent further punishment. The result was recorded as a third-round technical knockout (TKO) victory for Mundine.Lester Ellis is particularly significant to Sunshine and Melbourne's western suburbs because he rose from a local boxing gym in West Sunshine to become a world champion. His success brought national attention to the local boxing community and made him one of the district's most notable sporting figures. His achievements demonstrated the important role that community sporting clubs played in providing opportunities for young people in the western suburbs. The Sunshine Police Youth and Citizens Club (PCYC) at 52A Sun Crescent, Sunshine, was an important community organisation that promoted youth development through sport, recreation, and community engagement. Operating in partnership with Victoria Police and local volunteers, the club provided a safe environment where young people could participate in activities such as boxing, martial arts, and fitness training. The club played a significant role in fostering community connections and supporting youth participation in organised sport throughout Melbourne's western suburbs.7742.01 - Sunshine Police Youth And Citizens Club 52A Sun Crescent Sunshine 2000 Photographs (Advocate 48).JPG 7742.02 - Sunshine Police Youth And Citizens Club 52A Sun Crescent Sunshine 2000 Photographs (Advocate 48).JPG 7742.03 - Sunshine Police Youth And Citizens Club 52A Sun Crescent Sunshine 2000 Photographs (Advocate 48).JPG 7742.04 - Sunshine Police Youth And Citizens Club 52A Sun Crescent Sunshine 2000 Photographs (Advocate 48).JPG 7742.05 - Sunshine Police Youth And Citizens Club 52A Sun Crescent Sunshine 2000 Photographs (Advocate 48).JPG 7742.06 - Sunshine Police Youth And Citizens Club 52A Sun Crescent Sunshine 2000 Photographs (Advocate 48).JPGsunshine police youth and citizens club, sun crescent, sunshine
