Sir Arvi Hiller Parbo: A.H. Parbo joined Western Mining Corporation in 1956 and over the next 12 years held the positions of Underground Surveyor, Underground Manager, Technical Assistant to the Managing Director, and Deputy General Superintendent. He was appointed General Manager in 1968 and became a Director in 1970. He was appointed Deputy Managing Director in 1971 and became Managing Director in the same year. In 1974, Parbo was appointed Chairman and Managing Director of Western Mining Corporation. Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC), incorporated on 2 March 1933, was active in minerals exploration and production in Australia and elsewhere until taken over by BHP Billiton in June 2005. A comprehensive history of the company has not been published, but there is a great deal of published and unpublished material recording various aspects of its activities. In December 2002 WMC Limited demerged into two companies: WMC Resources Limited and Alumina Limited. WMC Resources Limited was taken over by BHP Billiton in June 2005. Photographs taken at the time of the purchase by Western Mining Corporation of the property owned by G.P. Daly of Raywood Road, Woodvale, in 1986. The intent of the purchase was to provide land for the Woodvale ponds. Land size was 16 acres, known as Allotment 13, Section 3, Parish of Nerring. A personal account of Sir Lindesay Clark, mining engineer. Clark records his early association with Gold Mines of Australia Limited and the formation of Western Mining Corporation Limited. He was appointed WMC's first Technical Managing Director. After WW2 Lindesay led the re-establishment and expansion of gold mining operations within the WMC-GMA Group at centers such as Kalgoorlie, Norseman, Reedy's, Coolgardie and Bullfinch in Western Australia, and Woods Point and Newstead in Victoria. In 1952 Lindesay became chairman of WMC. Lindesay had first-hand knowledge of working conditions below ground and living conditions above. "Built on Gold. Recollections of Western Mining" written by G. Lindesay Clark. Foreward by Henry Somerset. This book discusses the personal account of one of Australia's best-known mining engineers who first came linked with Collins House and W.S. Robinson in 1931. Letter from Western Mining Corporation to D.W. Cahill, Barrister, Bendigo dated 1st October, 1980, from J.H. Lalor, Exploration Manager, Minerals, WMC, regarding the objective of the Western Mining Corporation exploration program on the Bendigo goldfield. The major objective is to develop a long term mining operation 'which would be environmentally acceptable' It was considered that the value 'of such an operation to the local community and the Bendigo region would be substantial'.
