The Lakes Entrance run was occupied by the late Thomas Roadknight. In 1852 his brother William took charge. Soon after this Corringle Station was occupied by the late T. T. Stirling. William was born at Collingwood, the son of William Roadknight and Jane Stirling. The Roadknight family came from Colac on board the Enterprise to their new home at Cunninghame. The house on the hill, now Pine Hill was named Merrangbaur (home of the lyrebird). William held the Lake Tyers and Snowy River run in partnership with Thomas Telfer Stirling who took up the eastern end of the run on the west bank of the Snowy River. The run included Ewing‟s Marsh — the Ewing brothers were earlier landowners but had no formal run in this area. William served four terms on the Tambo Shire Council as a representative of the Bendoc Riding despite not being a resident of the Riding. He was then elected to the Orbost Shire as a West Riding councillor in 1896-97, 1897-98 and was Shire President in his final year 1898-99 This item is associated with Roadknight family who were early settlers in the Orbost district.A black / white photograph of a family group of mother, father and six children standing outdoor. In 1902 financial assistance was provided by David Mitchell a significant businessman and contractor from Melbourne and the business then expanded and became a major supplier of refractories for gas works in Melbourne, with side lines in moulded fire bricks for foundries and smelting furnaces and complete kiln lines for potteries. The business traded under the name Darley Firebrick Company and later as Darley Refractories Ptd Ltd and was in business for over 100 years. The tile (aka refractory) described in this record was possibly produced for use in very high temperatures (in excess of 1,000°F [538°C]) encountered in modern manufacturing. More heat-resistant than metals, they are used to line the hot surfaces found inside many industrial processes. The date the tile was produced is unknown.Rectangle shaped ceramic tile'Darley 26' inscribed within a circledarley firebrick company, refractory materials, wittick family bacchus marsh, william thomas wittick 1857-1939, darley refractories ptd ltd -

Grant was a member of a prominent local family and was active in public affairs throughout his life. The federation of the Australian Colonies was a turning point in Australian history and as such its achievement was celebrated in a range of ways. A major step towards achieving Federation was the referendum of July 1899 which saw five of the six Australian colonies vote in favor of Federation, with Western Australia later voting in favor in 1900.Printed poster sized document certifying that William Grant of Bacchus Marsh voted in a referendum of Victorian electors on 27th the July 1899 on the question of an Australian Federal Constitution. Southcombe, for Best Batting Average’ ‘James Lillywhite Frowd & Co., Manufacturers, Borough, England’ ‘Made for George Marsh, Melbourne’ ‘W.H.Ponsford, -/1/1957’ This is a wooden cricket bat (light colour wood, presumably willow) with a handle covered in oiled thread. ...This bat was awarded to Thomas William Southcombe in 1876 for the best batting average during the 1875-6 season at Warrnambool Cricket Club. Thomas William Southcombe was the son of Thomas and Mary Southcombe of Port Fairy. With his parents, Thomas and Mary, he arrived in Port Fairy in 1854. Thomas Senior was a carpenter who established several businesses in Port Fairy and served on the local Council for many years as a Councillor and Mayor. Thomas Junior appears to have migrated to U.S.A. and died there in 1904. The cricket bat was manufactured by the British firm of James Lillywhite, Frowd & Co. James Lillywhite was an English cricketer whose uncle had originally established the sports store and manufacturing business which lasted under various names until the 21st century. A cricketer named Lillywhite played in Warrnambool in 1874 with an All England Team under the captaincy of W.G.Grace. It is not known whether this was James Lillywhite or another member of the Liilywhite family as several of them played first class cricket.. The impression of the signature of W.H.Ponsford on the bat is an intriguing one. W.H. (Bill) Ponsford was a famous Australian cricketer who retired in the late 1930s. The Southcombe cricket bat was given by Mary Southcombe (Thomas’ sister) to the old Warrnambool Museum in 1923 and it is surmised that Bill Ponsford visited Warrnambool in 1957 (tthis appears to be the date under the signature imprint) and was shown the bat. It is then surmised that he rested a piece of paper or an album page on the bat while he signed his name and the impression of the signature has come through onto the bat. The old Museum closed in the 1960s and the bat was then passed on to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society from the Warrnambool City Council collection of items from the Museum. This bat is of considerable importance because of its provenance and its connection with the Warrnambool Cricket Club, the Southcombe family of Port Fairy, the Lillywhite manufacturers, the old Warrnambool Museum and Bill Ponsford. It is also a good example of the type of cricket bat used in Australia in the 1870s. This is a wooden cricket bat (light colour wood, presumably willow) with a handle covered in oiled thread. It has an etched inscription on one side of the bat and the names of the manufacturer and distributor on the other side. There is also a faint impression of another signature. The blade of the bat is slightly curved. ‘W.C.C. Season 1875-6 Presented to T.W. It was constructed in 1909 as the Empire Works to a design by prolific Melbourne architect William Pitt. It was purchased soon after by British safety match manufacturer Bryant and May who significantly expanded the building adding an additional level and the landmark clock tower. Bryant and May were unique in that they operated as a model factory providing workers with conditions and amenities which even today seem generous. These included a dining hall and sports facilities such as a tennis court and bowling green which were constructed in the 1920s. Bryant and May ceased Australian match manufacture in the early 1980s as a result of import competition. Their iconic Redheads matches are now imported from Sweden. It was built on a site once owned by John Fitzgerald (1850s). The land was later acquired by H. V. McKay who had transferred his Sunshine Harvester Works to the area in 1905 - 7. In 1920, the Albion railway station was moved nearer Ballarat Road at the request of Mr McKay. More people came to live in the area including soldier settlers.Albion Primary School's mission is to 'Aim High' in all we do so that our students grow to be socially capable, reach their full academic potential and become caring, respectful community minded people. Albion Primary School is located in a residential area in Albion, a small pocket of the local government area of Brimbank, approximately 10 kilometres west of Melbourne and was established in 1926. Our current enrolment is 199 students. We have a rich cultural diversity amongst our school community. The school is set around a courtyard with spacious playing areas including a grassed oval, running track, games courts, an adventure playground, sand pit, jumping pits, shady courtyard and garden areas, a vegetable garden and fruit tree orchard. As well as classroom groups, we have our learning teams, student house groups (siblings are allocated to the same house) and a Junior School Council. The school has four main buildings. All classrooms have air conditioning and interactive screens. Block A houses classrooms, staff areas and the administration offices. Our newest building has classrooms and some small group/office spaces. Block B includes our library, canteen and a multi-purpose room used for indoor physical education, Perceptual Motor Program, drama, visiting performers, and community activities. Block C houses classrooms and specialist rooms. We expect and receive the best from our students in terms of their learning and behaviour. The school’s dedicated and effective staff is strongly committed to helping students achieve personal, behavioural, social and academic success. In terms of learning, the highest priority is placed on the work in English and Mathematics. We also have a range of specialist and extra-curricular programs that we provide. Our specialist teacher-librarian is involved in reading extension programs that support development in literacy. All children are able to develop their artistic abilities through visual arts and music program. Our music program is supported by the Australian Children's Music Foundation. A specialist Physical Education teacher provides lessons for all children as well as the opportunity for students to participate in organised lunch time sporting competitions between the house groups. Auslan is the additional language all students learn at Albion. All children participate in a student wellbeing program that focuses on developing strong connections and a sense of belonging within the school. Our school student leaders participate in programs that help develop their leadership skills. 5156.01 - Albion State School 2003 Grade 1 2P 5156.01 - Albion State School 2003 Grade 1 2P Names Back Row L2R Jessica Tawaf Tyson Freeman Christene Protacio Nicholas Burrows Ebony Wemyss Kaliesha Birch Brandon Marsh Howe Second Row L2R Dale Reynolds Liam Noack Jack Scholfield Chelsea TeRay Melisa Husejnovic mile Ajder David Ung Joshua Kanongataa Front Row L2R Elias Condadis Boudoloh David Tran Chelsea Lever Nuri Nurhussien Travis Rand Sang Lam Teacher Mrs L Parnis Mrs Betty Batty Mrs A Paschalidis 5156.02 - Albion State School 2003 Grade 3 4T 5156.02 - Albion State School 2003 Grade 3 4T Names Back Row L2R Nicole Williams Paloma Donato Carl Schwencke Mitchell Jessica Heeps Thuy Tran Amy Caruana Smith Tarick Halaseh Travis Montague Bethany Tippet Second Row L2R Imran Clancy Nicolle Reynolds Aaron McIntyre Bojana Kakuca Melissa Hall Jesse Culhane Saamu Sasa Opacic Luke DAlfonso Front Row L2R Suerour Abdul Alrahman Jim Murphy Julie Ung Zoe Ward Kasey Davis Hayden Formosa Kobi Marsden Teachers Mary Talbot Sadnra Spurr 5156.03 - Albion State School 2003 Grade 5 6H 5156.03 - Albion State School 2003 Grade 5 6H Names Back Row L2R Dusan Zarkovic Scott Leetham Owen Malolo Aidan Wileman Zayne Duggan Rafael Protacio Michael Nardella Second Row L2R James Schwencke Mitchell Olivia Moore Julie Rand Stephanie Stronell Sang Nguyen Jacqulyn TeRay Dion Johnson Corine Markovic Front Row L2R Daniel Kindred Jennifer Truong Tony Tongpoon Jahnah Anne Clark Lynda Ferrara Merren Smart Peter Mayne Absent Alisi Faingaanuku Teacher Wayne Haren 5156.04 - Albion State School 2003 Grade 5 6T 5156.04 - Albion State School 2003 Grade 5 6T Names Back Row L2R Cody Mayne William Burrows Sam Malolo Rachel Elliott David Kennedy Jack Wightman Peter Horak Second Row L2R Callan Tishler Christopher Dymott Malgorzata Wasilewska Jade Formosa Kelly Kennedy Jenny Williams Robert Reynolds Ben Milicevic Front Row L2R Jake Raye Hayley McPhan Lindsay Ladd John Teagan Maguire Tiffany Smith Jesse Hearn Nichalos Davie Teacher Jann Turner 5156.05 - Albion State School 2003 Grade Prep 1B 5156.05 - Albion State School 2003 Grade Prep 1B Names Back Row L2R Nerys Davie Jamie Wooding Amanda Mach Michelle Banh Shannae Marsh Howe Adam Ferrara Second Row L2R Bronwyn Testa Steven Firth Alexis Ante Nhu Nguyen Darko Grezlov Jenny Truong Front Row L2R Jordan Birch Dylan Tishler Cindy Nguyen Hani Mohammad Jake Lever Teacher Miss E Barr Mrs Betty Batty 5156.06 - Albion State School 2003 Grade Prep G 5156.06 - Albion State School 2003 Grade Prep G Names Back Row L2R Haylee Markinkovic Dylan Harris Rhiannon Clayton Courtney Doggett Second Row L2R Linh Tran Madelyne Markovic Ethan Caruana Smith Elsie Kanongataa Jai Banda Cecilia Nguyen Bradley Rickard Front Row L2R Leah Maguire David Le Tiffany Anne Murphy Selina Heeps Liam McIntyre Allison Smart Teacher Mrs D George Ms J Shaw 5156.07 - Albion State School 2003 Staff 5156.07 - Albion State School 2003 Staff Names Back Row L2R Angela Paschalidis Betty Batty Jann Turner John Milne Wayne Haren Andrea Murray Lorraine Farrugia Second Row L2R Lynn Mahoney Sandra Spurr Elissa Barr Julie Hrovatin Marnie Galea Susan Carpenter Adrienne Erwood Front Row L2R Mary Talbot Lorraine Parnis Teresa Woods Julie Shaw Donna George Emily Dimitracopoulos Absent Chris Sortinoalbion state school, albion primary school, adelaide street, albion -

The man in the centre of the image holding the reins of the horse is possibly Thomas Mason. One of the two women seated in the buggy is possibly his wife Catherine Mason (nee Whelan). This house was built by grazier George Palmer Hall around 1846-1848 north of what is now Lerderderg Street, Bacchus Marsh, at a point close to the Lerderderg River. The house and the accompanying farm of over 5,000 hectares was leased by George Ball to George Hobler in the late 1840s and early 1850s. During this time George Hobler's daughter Emily married Henry Bacchus the son of Captain William Bacchus. By 1865 Thomas Mason had purchased the property. Mason named the property Riverton. After his death in the 1890s the property was owned by a number of different people. The house was still in use until 1999 but since this time has been unoccupied and its condition has significantly deteriorated. This image is significant because it depicts one of the earliest houses built in the town of Bacchus Marsh. It is probably the earliest surviving image of this Bacchus Marsh pre-gold rush structure.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll'. The image shows a brick house, with an iron roof and with a white picket fence around the front garden. There is a buggy to the left of the image with two women seated in it. A man stands in front of the buggy holding the reins of a white horse which is harnessed to the buggy. Further to the right of the image is an older man with his hands in his pockets. On the front: Stevenson & McNicoll. Photo. 108 Elizabeth St. Melbourne. COPIES CAN BE OBTAINED AT ANY TIME. On the back: LIGHT & TRUTH inscribed on a banner surmounted by a representation of the rising sun. John Waghorn was an amateur historian, an authority on the history of Victoria's postal services. He could tell you how mail was delivered in the high country in the 1880s, where the town of Gobur was, or when the overland Melbourne-Sydney mail service began. He admitted that his hobby has got a little out of hand. He had 30 filing cabinets, and indexes of more than 70,000 postal workers over the past 160 years crammed into three rooms at his home.
