The officers in the back row wearing high white/light-colored custodian helmets represent the Foot Police (Land), while the members seated and standing in the lower rows wearing dark uniforms and caps or flat-brimmed hats represent the Water Police (Sea). Thomas Scott Band came out to Victoria as a second mate on the ship Adair in 1853. In the following year he joined the water police and was stationed at Geelong for a number of years, when he transferred to the Williamstown water police. He retired as a senior constable in 1887 after serving 33 years' service. He died aged 75 in January 1907. He almost served 30 years service in the police force and died of illness during September 1900 aged 56. (Source: Williamstown Chronicle 15 September 1900) The handwritten text explicitly highlights Thomas R. Hazle (standing in the center row with a dark hat). Hazle was formerly a leading seaman on H.M.S. Nelson, stationed in Victoria, and left the navy in 1886, when he joined the water police and was stationed at Williamstown and South Wharf. He was a senior-constable when he retired during 1911. He died aged 86 on the 15th September 1931. In 1914 the Williamstown Grammar School trustees transferred trust in the school grounds and donated the original school building to the Department of Education to establish a state government high school for Williamstown. This meant the dissolution of the Williamstown Grammar school board and the school's senior students either went on to other grammar schools around Melbourne or enrolled at Williamstown High School. Williamstown High School continues today and the original Williamstown Grammar School building is still in use in the school grounds at Pasco Street. This would have been the end of Williamstown Grammar if not for the highly respected young head of the junior school, Mabel Molland. At the Williamstown Grammar School Speech Night at the end of 1914, the Williamstown Chronicle (Saturday 26 December 1914) reports that management of the school has been taken over by Mabel Molland and that she addressed the assembly saying, 'acceding to the expressed wish of many, I decided to carry on the junior school, and wish to thank the parents for their hearty cooperation in my undertaking'. The reputation of Mabel Molland as a teacher of enormous ability and continuing support from the community would enable the school to survive through depression, war and troubled finances, to see the reinstatement of a school board in 1956, the reintroduction of secondary education in 1978 and a now thriving multi-campus independent P-12 school in Melbourne's west. This photograph is the earliest known image of Mabel Molland (standing in the the third row, second from the right) with her students. The group is pictured in the grounds of the Holy Trinity church hall on the corner of Aitken and Pasco Streets, Williamstown, which was home to the School from 1915 to 1956.Black and white reproduction image on photographic paper of students in four rows with trees in the background, a board in the front row with the words Strathmore/Grammar School/Williamstown. This historical photograph depicts members of the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Brigade (W.V.F.B.) located at Ferguson Street. Back row L-R: J. Davidson, J. Russell, J. Wallace, H. Strange, G. Gilbert, A. Knowles, J. Rivett, J. Burton-Clay; Front row L-R: F. Boden, Captain J.E Murdock, Secretary W.H. Hall, Superintendent L. Worthington, Hose Officer W. Godwin, Lieutenant N.R. Wilson, G.H.M. Paine The following is an excerpt from the Williamstown Chronicle Friday 25 December 1891 on the disbanding of the WVFB. THE OLD FIRE BRIGADE A meeting of the late Williamstown Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in the Mechanics Institute last Friday evening for the purpose of winding up the brigade and to receive the secretary's report. Mr L. Worthington occupied the chair, and every member present. Minutes of last meeting read and confirmed. The chairman then called on the secretary to read the report, which was received and adopted; the receipts L141 18s 4d included a balance on hand from last year of L35 4s 6d; the expenditure, L67 9s 4d, leaving a balance of L74 9s 5d in hand. It was resolved that this amount should be divided amongst the 16 members, each receiving Is 6 3/4d for every month he had been a member up to the time the brigade was disbanded by the New Fire Board. A vote of thanks was passed to Superintendent Worthington for the kind and forbearing manner he had acted towards the members during the 9 years and 10 months he had been superintendent, and that a letter be sent expressing the deep gratitude the members had towards him. Mr Worthington has always been held in high esteem by his boys, for when leaving for the old country some years ago they would not let him go away without wishing him bon voyage and a safe return to them; they have also shown their esteem to their superintendent on other occasions. A vote of thanks was also recorded to Mr W. A. Hall, hon. sec. for the valuable services rendered to the brigade during his 8 years of service. Mr Worthington also eulogized the assistance he had received from Mr Hall; Captain Murdoch, Lieutenant Wilson and Hose officer Godwin also coming in for their share of thanks. Mr Worthington, before declaring the brigade disbanded, invited the members to the Morning Star Hotel to partake with him in a convival glass. Peculiar to remark the first meeting was held in the hotel mentioned 11 years ago. After spending a pleasant half hour, during which several toasts were proposed, the superintendent declared the brigade disbanded and that the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Brigade was a thing of the past. The members then dispersed. Source: Williamstown Chronicle Friday 25 December 1891 williamstown volunteer fire brigade, 1887

The Sailors' Rest, located in Ann Street, Williamstown opened on 24 May 1878. An article dating 25 May 1878, in the Williamstown Chronicle, describes the interior of the renovated Wesleyan chuch as depicted on the print: "Inside the building the carpenters and painters have been busily engaged. It has been painted throughout, the lower part of the walls be ing stained blue. There is a form all round the building with tables up the sides, and a number of small round tables are scattered about the roomi. In the centre is a splendid wire stand for pot plants, of which there is a grand display. Pictures adorn, the walls; singing birds warble their sweet strains ; and the silent gold fish of which there are several globes add to the beauty of the display. At the east end of the room is the bar, occupying one corner, while in the other are the shelves which accommodate the books of the Library, while last evening across the end wall was in large illuminated letters-'" The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof." On the platform are a piano and harmonium. The room is very presentable whether in day light or illuminated vith gas." Eva Carmichael, one of the two survivors of the Loch Art tragedy, visited here on 19 July 1878. She had stayed with Mr and Mrs Gibson and travelled from Camperdown to Melbourne (15 July 1878) to sail back to Ireland. Article in the Leader, 20 July 1878, Page 19: "The Saitors' Rest at Williamstown was yesterday visited by Miss Carmichael, Mr. T. Pearce and Mr. and Mrs. Gibson. The objects of the institution were explained to them, and after a brief stay they complimented the committee on their arrangement. The attendance has ho largely increased that the receipts now average £80 per month. The print is a rare insight of the Sailors' Rest in Williamstown, depicitng the room filled with plants, birds in cages, the seamen enjoying some board games, and coffee.Illustration depicting the interios of the Williamstown Sailors' Rest in 1878 with decoration (plants, paintings, birds in cages), and sailors at tables busy playing chess, talking, having a drink.sailors' rest, williamstown, 1878, plants, books, library, tables, sailors, games, chess, coffee, seamen, sir william stawell, hugh ronald reid

This portrait was presented by the Victorian Bar to the Library in 1917 to commemorate Schutt’s fifty years as the Supreme Court Librarian. The portrait was presented at a ceremony presided over by Mr Mitchell KC who noted the “unanimity with which the members of the profession had adopted the suggestion that the eminent services of Mr Schutt should be recognised in this way.” Chief Justice Madden also spoke on this occasion and there were a number of judges and members of the legal profession present. John Schutt had been born in England in 1831 and migrated to Victoria as a young man, initially working as a school teacher he was appointed librarian, during Redmond Barry’s time in 1866. He started work in the Old Court in Russell street and would have supervised the move of the library to its new and greatly expanded premises in William Street in 1884. As well as secretary to the Library committee, he also acted as the Secretary of the Board of Examiners on occasion. After his death in 1919 in its obituary, the Williamstown Chronicle noted that Schutt was regarded as a Solon, an ancient greek law giver who gave wise advice. Away from the Court he was a councillor of many years standing in Williamstown, representing the Victoria Ward, what is now the suburb of Newport, it would appear Schutt street in Newport was named after him. His eldest son William Schutt was appointed a Supreme Court judge in 1919. The portrait of Schutt is a companion piece to the Sir Thomas a’Beckett picture painted shortly before the Schutt portrait and for the same client, they share the same frame design with gum leaf motif. This portrait was undertaken early in Meldrum’s career and before he had fully developed his theory of painting. Duncan Max Meldrum (1875-1955) was a controversial figure in his later years as he strongly opposed modernism and non-figurative art. His works are found in most of the state galleries, including a wide selection at the National Gallery of Victoria. This portrait is of interest for whom it portrays and as the work of a well known artistFull length portrait in oils of John Schutt. Schutt is standing up looking out the to the viewer. His hand rests on a small pile of books. He is dressed soberly in a three piece black suit. His white beard and hair all meticulously trimmed and realised. The props used in this painting provide the main colour as the background has become dark over the years. The books sit atop of a red and gold draped table. Behind Schutt is what appears to be a crimson velvet chair and he gives every appearence of having just arisen from the chair to engage with the viewer. The painting has an unusual light source at the foot of the painting with Schutt's legs providing shadows. Signed Meldrum lower right hand corner. Plaque inscription is John Schutt, Esq. Supreme Court Librarian

The original postcards in this series (2013.002 to 2013.018) were generously loaned to Williamstown Botanic Gardens by a private collector for copying. The fountain is located on the southern side of the ornamental lake and was erected to celebrate the jubilee of the municipality (17 March 1906). Controversy surrounded the commission for the design and construction of the fountain, as it was originally assigned to a contractor in Carlton. Williamstown residents insisted the fountain be designed and constructed locally, and on December 1906 the fountain was tendered by local firm Bliss and Sons and opened for public use in 1906. The fountain features a symmetrical plan, consisting of fur granite columns supporting a granite canopy and is fully operational following restoration work in 2013. The idea for the fountain came from an elderly resident of Williamstown who suggested the council follow the example of Ballarat’s gardens with its many statues and monuments. The postcards are evidence of the interest the gardens held as a subject for postcard publishers. The text and images provide a snapshot into fashions, social interests and concerns of the time. The professionally produced images provide a pictorial history of Gardens including changing planting styles, various structures and features of the Gardens eg the aviary, cannons, the fountain, the second Curator’s Lodge and gates. The images offer an opportunity to compare garden vistas with the present day. The significance of the fountain is its reflection of how Williamstown people felt for their Gardens and the importance placed on investing in locally operated business. It was noted in the Brief Jottings column of the Williamstown Chronicle, February 24 1906, the fountain is a “We favor the erection of the jubilee fountain in the Giffard-street (Williamstown Botanic) Gardens. Ornaments of that kind there will make that beauty spot even more attractive.” Sepia scene of a fountain situated on paths bordered with rocks.
