This photograph is believed to have been taken at the Bosisto's distillery on Woori Yallock Creek at what is now Butterfield Reserve, Emerald. Chemist and later parliamentarian Joseph Bosisto (1824-98) established a number of distilleries in the area through the 1860s and 70s; the Butterfield Reserve still is believed to have been established in 1876. This photo may have been taken around 1916, when Australia was still the world's leading supplier of eucalyptus oil - by this time a globally popular product. By the 1920s, Joby Brady and his son were running the distillery business.Bosisto's eucalyptus distillery was an early Emerald industry with global significance; eucalyptus oil was believed to be the first distinctively Australian product exported overseas. This photograph is a very clear representation of the industry - to the extent that it is even used repeatedly in Euca's webpages discussing the history of the industry.Captured in black and white, a working eucalyptus distillery processes large quantities of eucalyptus leaves into eucalyptus oil. Two men stand holding tools, one under the tin roof of the distillery and another on a horsecart carrying a new pile of leaves. Another stands behind the distillery, carrying more leaves. The largest pile of leaves is in front of the still. The still is sheltered by a tin roofed structure with open walls, wooden support beams, and a chimney in the background. Further in the background, trees can be barely seen. This photograph is a scanned copy, glossy on the obverse and with normal paper texture and handwritten notes on the reverse.Reverse: "Distilling Eucalyptus / Bosistoes. The Emerald Football club history dates from 1904, and like many local clubs and organisations, has always played an important role in the community. This trophy was awarded to Geoff "Digger" Dolan of the Emerald Football Club for scoring 15 goals in a single match against the Woori Yallock Club on the 9th of July 1977. The match broke the club record at the time, resulting in 120 goals being scored in 12 matches from the 16th of April to 9th of July 1977. The trophy consisting of an Australian Rules football mounted on a stand was probably the same football that was used in the match. The football was manufactured by historic Victorian sports equipment makers, Nutting & Young, who ceased operations in 1977.This is an example of a creative sporting trophy which recognised an Emerald Football Club player's outstanding achievement. Local football and other sporting teams are often integral to the economic and social development of an area.A trophy consisting of an actual Australian Rules football secured onto a hard plastic stand with a metal clasp. A metal plaque on the stand is inscribed with the award details. The football is mounted in an upward and forward position as though ready to be kicked. On metal plaque inscribed: 'PRESENTED TO G. 'DIGGER' DOLAN / CLUB RECORD OF 15 GOALS IN A MATCH / AGAINST WOORI YALLOCK JULY 1977 / 102 GOALS IN 12 MATCHES / 16 APRIL 1977 - 5 JULY 1977' On the football, printed: 'Football made by Nutting & Young, Vic/ NFL APPROVED' Also on the football handwritten signatures of (presumably) other team membersemerald football club

Skein holder is from c1890-1900 and used by four generations of the donor's family who lived around Woori Yallock and Yellingbo. Donor's family descended from settler John Douthie (1831-1897), his son Andrew Douthie married Jessie Sands Smith (1875 - 1948). Item believed to have been owned by Jessie who passed it on to her fourth child, Mary, who passed it to her child Lillian who passed it to her daughter Leanne, the donor. No makers mark on item. Mary worked as a teacher and sewing mistress at Woori Yallock Primary School and used the item in her personal time to make clothing for the family. An umbrella-style wooden skein holder with a metal clamp at the base to allow it to attach to a table or similar. When not in use, item is small and compact, however once unfolded the arms extend out in an umbrella shape with thin timber rods bound together with leather ties.

While the caption on this postcard says 'Gembrook', Menzies Creek does not run to Gembrook; it diverges from Woori Yallock Creek at Butterfield Reserve in Emerald and then runs to the town of Menzies Creek. This makes it more likely that this photograph is from Emerald or Menzies Creek, with the annotation on the reverse suggesting it was near Butterfield Reserve and therefore in Emerald. It is part of Melbourne's V.S.M. (Victoria Stamp Market) Series, printed in Prussia, Germany alongside several similar hand-coloured postcards in our collection. This postcard is believed to originate from c. 1905, but the image itself - depicting a gold washing bath on Menzies Creek - might be older. Gold mining in Emerald was most popular in the 1850s and 60s. However, gold mining on Menzies Creek reopened in the 1890s depression, which is a more likely source of this photograph. This postcard is significant for its relative uniqueness as a colourised depiction of Emerald's gold mining history. This item is a hand-coloured photographic postcard. The reverse has empty message, stamp, and address sections, with a small handwritten annotation in pencil and printed publication information. The photograph is accompanied by a printed caption in the bottom-left. It depicts a creek running through a wooden trough, surrounded by greenery - trees, shrubs, and ferns, in particular. The paper is slightly yellowed.Obverse, Caption: "Gold Washing Bath, Menzies Creek Gembrook" Reverse: Handwritten Annotation: "Menzies Creek near Butterfield Park / GOLD" Printed Label, Vertical: "Printed in Prussia" Printed Label, Horizontal: "V.S.M. Mary Stalker’s engagement notice in The Argus in July 1947 indicates that she was the youngest daughter of Mr & Mrs A M Stalker of Montlare [Monclair] Avenue, North Brighton. It announces her engagement to ”Cr Howard Breedon Everard JP Ev-Ron, Woori Yallock, Youngest son of Hon WH Everard Wellington St Kew and the late Mrs Everard.” Beatrice Mary Stalker was born in 1919. Her parents were Alexander MacLaren Stalker (1885-1970/1973) and Charlotte Eleanor Hayward (1884-1953) who were married in 1911. Her sisters were Joan Winnock Stalker, Betty Neil Stalker and Ruth McLaren Stalker. Charlotte was a teacher prior to her marriage. Alexander, an accountant, lived in Wattle Valley Road, Canterbury in 1910. From 1912-1931 they are listed at ‘Benwerrin’, Wandsworth Road, Surrey Hills. Mary Stalker married in 1949 and by 1954 she and Howard were living at 44 Wandsworth Road, Surrey Hills, which was their home for decades. Howard was born in 1914 and died in October 2010: "EVERARD. - Howard Breedon. In loving memory of Howard, who lived life to the full to the very end of his 96 years. Greatly loved and honoured by Mary, Rosemary, David, Elizabeth, John and extended families." Beatrice Mary Everard died on 25 September 2019, aged 93. it is assumed that the woman in the photo is Mary's mother, Charlotte Eleanor Stalker (nee Hayward). The photo taken at the beach in 1930's may have been at Brighton, given the family’s later association with the suburb. This photo documents part of the social history of a family with a long and strong association with Surrey Hills. The backdrop of the typical bathing boxes used for changing into swimsuits, for lunch and for storing sports and beach gear, documents beach recreation and culture of the 1930s. Given the family's later residence in Brighton, this may well have been taken at Brighton Beach. For many years in the late nineteenth century, Brighton was Melbourne's favourite seaside destination. The now iconic bathing boxes were a response to Victorian ideas of morality and sea bathing. There are 82 Brighton bathing boxes, which protected by a heritage overlay because of their uniform scale and proportion, building materials, sentry order alignment. All retain their classic Victorian architectural features with timber framing, weatherboards and corrugated iron roofs. They remain as they did over one hundred years ago, as licensed bathing boxes. Service amenities such as electricity or water were never connected.A black and white photograph of a lady and little girl on the beach. There is a row of bathing boxes behind them.(miss) mary stalker, bathing boxes, (mrs) mary everard, (miss beatrice mary stalker, (mrs) beatrice mary everard, (mrs) charlotte eleanor stalker, (miss) charlotte eleanor hayward

EXPLORING THE UPPER YARRA (Newsletter No. 105, November 1995, by Bettina Woodburn) We enjoyed the Spring Excursion, this year "Exploring the Upper Yarra" - in spite of the constant rain and the countryside under the cloud cover, especially in the valleys, being mainly shiny shades of green. The occasional fields of buttercups, clumps of arum lilies and splendid rhododendron and other flowering bushes became very special. The Cobb and Co coach was warm and a cosy retreat as we zig-zagged on the highways and byways to glimpse the Yarra River, upstream and down, its secret places, and particularly the many bridges. Russell excelled as 'Poet Laureate', reading from Dacre Smyth's book. This 1979 publication includes paintings of all the bridges along the river with poems and brief descriptions of each one. Some of the bridges are in out of the way places and are not very well known. We looked forward to hearing the poetry as much as seeing the ' constructions'…Big Pat (was he short or tall, lean or fat? He did win the two hundred pound reward for discovering gold and had the creek named after him), about the 'Eddies'?, and the disliked 'meccano' bridge in Warburton, etc. etc. The hot roast lunch in the old Reefton Hotel was also most welcome. It was easy to imagine it peopled by miners and early settlers. Starting by crossing the new (1974) concrete bridge at Warrandyte we headed through Wonga Park with views to the Christmas Hills and to the escarpment of the Yering Gorge, which causes flood waters to back up through the Yarra Glen plain, so avoiding disasters downstream. At the end of a long driveway we found the wooden, privately owned Henley Bridge (1935 after the 1934 floods). This facilitates access to different parts of Henley Farm and to Lilydale. Everard Park, named after Blanche Shallard's father, a State Member for 17 years, below the Highway Yarra crossing was in need of care. It is 10 miles from Yarra Glen by road but, as "Yarra Marra” canoeists well know, 32 winding miles down by water. After more delightful countryside scenes we joined the Warburton Highway at Woori Yallock. From the old Railway Station at Launching Place the Centennial Trail for walkers, cyclists and ' horse riders has replaced the rails. The line from Lilydale was opened in 1901, and the last diesel freight train ran to Warburton in 1965. It continued to rain as we had morning tea in Warburton in a shelter between footbridges. From here we continued upstream past the Bridge to O'Shannasy Lodge and Reservoir, Starvation Creek, and the Peninsular tunnel (miners dug it as at Pound Bend) which we visited (scrambling down those steps!) on our return after lunch. Our furthermost point was the Upper Yarra Dam Reserve (and vast catchment area). Finished in 1957 after ten years work and 100 years after Yan Yean, it supplies much of Melbourne's water. After crossing the 30m Launching Place Bridge to the Eltham side of the Yarra and Healesville, we saw in the distance the Yarra Glen Timber Trestle Bridge over the river flats "the longest for years in the land it was said!" Harry's dream of "better weather over the Divide" unfortunately didn't come true, but I'm sure we 36 members will retain happy memories of a day that was wet and green and filled with Bridges.
