It will be useful for display. This is a ceramic container, light-brown in colour and varnished. The body of the container is circular in shape with a smaller circular-shaped neck and a top opening with a lip for pouring. The container has some imperfections and protrusions and the top has some chipping. The two cards of nibs are retail display cards of the dip pen nibs that William Mitchell Calligraphy produced, dating back to around the 1920’s, which was the time of the Great Exhibition in the UK. At that time dip pens with steel nibs were the main writing instruments. British Pens Ltd. had recently formed as a company and its subsidiaries included the the company William Mitchell, which is why British Pens Ltd. is named on the cards as well. One card (1) has the Round Hand nib, which is widely used today for calligraphy scripts. The other card (2) has the Script nib that has round upturned points for monocline or unshaded lettering that is also used for calligraphy. The nibs also have a detachable reservoir. The pen nibs are shaped to fit into a slot in the base of a wooden or Bakelite pen holder. The hole at the front of the nib is for collecting ink from a well, which is then stored in a reservoir at the back of the nib. The nibsare stamped with their nib size and Pedigree (what type of nib it is) and maker’s details. William Mitchell Calligraphy still makes these nibs today with a slightly difference finish. This booklet was given to subscribers of the Warrnambool Standard as an almanac for the year 1875. It was the first of these Standard Almanacs and replaced the yearly diary which was previously printed in the newspaper. These Standard Almanacs were published yearly from 1875 to 1930 and contained information for the residents of Warrnambool and district on the year ahead – the names of local public officials, businesses, hotel keepers, school personnel, local organizations representatives etc. The Warrnambool Standard newspaper was established in 1872 and continues to this day. This booklet is of high significance as it is the first of the yearly Warrnambool Standard Almanacs and contains much valuable information on Warrnambool and district for the year 1875. It is a very valuable research tool for those studying and writing Warrnambool’s history and is a rare copy. This copy appears to have belonged to George Barber, the son of George Barber, a well-known solicitor who opened a legal practice in Warrnambool in 1855. He died in 1879 and it appears that one or more members of his family went to live in the Maryborough area as this copy came into the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society via the Midlands Historical Society. This is a soft cover booklet of 80 pages plus many advertisements at the front and back. It has a buff-coloured cover with an ornamental border on the front cover and black lettering. The booklet contains a calendar and information on the people, organizations and businesses of Warrnambool and district in 1875. The original cover is missing and has been replaced by a plain piece of cream cardboard which is attached with a metal pin. This slate comes from the Glasgow Estate (Ellen Isabel Glasgow died in Warrnambool in 1971). It is presumed it was used by members of the Glasgow family. Slates such as this were used by all school children in Victoria (and presumably elsewhere) in the infant and younger age classes from the early days of the State until the early 1940s. It had the advantage of the work being able to be easily erased so that other work could be written. A slate pencil was used to write on this board. A more recent blackboard or chalkboard was in common use until the 1970's in junior classes. the writing with these was done with chalk.This is significant firstly as an example of past educational tools used by small children and so has important social significance as every school child of past generations would have used a slate. It is also important as it belonged to the Glasgow family. John Glasgow (c.1847-1925), at his property, Blackwood Hill, Wangoom, was a prominent cheese maker in the late 19th century and was one of the first shareholders and a member of the first Board of Directors of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory at Allansford. This pencil was found in 1946 by Mr Jim Pelling when an old wall was being pulled down in Warrnambool. This type of pen would have been used in the 19th century and apparently produced good legible writing and the lead point never wore out. No information is available on Jim Pelling or the location of the wall.Although this pencil has no known provenance it is of considerable interest because of its finding in an old wall in Warrnambool and because of its antiquarian value. It is a good example of a writing tool of the past and the ivory handle is of particular interest. This is a pencil with a handle made of ivory with a sharpened point of metallic lead screwed on the end of it. The end of the handle has an ornamental column shape. The lead at the end is slightly bent. Accompanying the pencil is an extract from a 1946 Warrnambool Standard detailing the finding of the pencil and some handwriting from a later date.
