It appears that this type of item was intended to be used or was used as a promotional item for the Wunderlich Ltd Terra Cotta factory in McIntyre Rd, North Sunshine. This factory made large ceramic veneer tiles for use on buildings such as the now demolished two Commonwealth Buildings on Spring St, Melbourne (green coloured tiles on buildings). This ashtray was made in 1966 by an employee who found the plaster mould among other moulds in the Terra Cotta factory. It is unknown when the mould was previously used to make ashtrays. Wunderlich Ltd had several factories in Sunshine (asbestos sheets, ceramic veneers, aluminium windows) and a pipe factory in conjunction with Humes. It was a major employer in the Sunshine area. There are very few items in the S&DHS files regarding Wunderlich Ltd.Square shaped ceramic earthenware ashtray that is glazed with an off white coloured vitreous coating. The glaze is crazed and has some small chips in it."WUNDERLICH LTD CERAMIC VENEER" in relief writing on the top surface. "Whisky 22-7-66" is incised into the bottom surface.wunderlich, mcintyre road, sunshine north

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1989, feature the Westend Market operating from the former Wunderlich industrial factory complex located on McIntyre Road, Sunshine North. The former asbestos factory was commonly known as the Wunderlich Factory or Wunderlich Ltd Sunshine Works. The factory was established in 1927 by the Wunderlich company and manufactured terracotta products, faience cladding, asbestos-cement building sheets marketed as "Durabestos", and asbestos pipes. The site's ownership changed several times: Wunderlich Ltd (1927 - 1969), CSR (Colonial Sugar Refining Company) (1969 - 1977) & James Hardie (1977 - 1983). After the factory closed in 1983, the complex was redeveloped as the Westend Market, Westend Hotel, nightclub and other commercial premises. The images document the adaptive reuse of an industrial site, demonstrating how former manufacturing premises were transformed into a new commercial and community-focused space. As traditional industries declined or relocated, developments such as the Westend Market provided new uses for these large buildings, reflecting the economic and social changes occurring throughout Melbourne's western suburbs during the late twentieth century.6860.01 - Westend Market McIntyre Road Sunshine North 1989 Photographs (Advocate 999).JPG 6860.02 - Westend Market McIntyre Road Sunshine North 1989 Photographs (Advocate 999).JPG 6860.03 - Westend Market McIntyre Road Sunshine North 1989 Photographs (Advocate 999).JPG 6860.04 - Westend Market McIntyre Road Sunshine North 1989 Photographs (Advocate 999).JPG 6860.05 - Westend Market McIntyre Road Sunshine North 1989 Photographs (Advocate 999).JPG 6860.06 - Westend Market McIntyre Road Sunshine North 1989 Photographs (Advocate 999).JPG 6860.07 - Westend Market McIntyre Road Sunshine North 1989 Photographs (Advocate 999).JPG 6860.08 - Westend Market McIntyre Road Sunshine North 1989 Photographs (Advocate 999).JPGwestend market, mcintyre road, sunshine north, wunderlich

Wunderlich Ltd was a significant employer in its Sunshine Asbestos sheet, and its Architectural Terra Cotta factories on McIntyre Road, North Sunshine (now the Westend Hotel and previously the Westend Market). The Wunderlich Terra Cotta factory in Sunshine made colour glazed terra cotta tiles for the outside walls of buildings such as the Commonwealth Buildings in Spring St Melbourne, and the Court Building in the City. The Sunshine factory also initially made the glaze for use on the terra cotta roof tiles made at the Mitcham factory. The letterhead is Wunderlich Limited 210 Kingsway South Melbourne 3025 which was the Victorian head office of the company The reference is dated 28 February 1969 and is signed by F Willaton who was the Works Superintendant of the Architectural Terra Cotta Factory in Sunshinewunderlich, walter "wally" zielinski

The Albury/Wodonga Handweavers and Spinners Guild was formed on 15th July 1970 at a meeting calling for interested people to attend a meeting, Mrs Reis had migrated from England bringing her spinning wheel and floor loom with her. The Guild was formed with 23 inaugural members. Guild members conducted workshops and demonstrated their work at the Albury Show and other venues. In 1973 a Woolcraft Festival Committee was formed and in 1974 the Guild was affiliated with the National Woolcraft Festival, which was held for many years at the Wool Store (in Albury and later at the Albury Showgrounds. In 1980 the Guild published “The Woolgatherers Handspun Pattern Book” which was very popular and had several reprints. The Albury Wodonga Handweavers and Spinners Guild is still an active organisation in the community more than 50 years after its formation. The Company name Australian Fine China was adopted in 1997. Its products were first produced in 1921 from its factory in Subiaco, Western Australia which opened under the name of Calyx Porcelain and Paint Company. In 1938 it was re-named H. L. Brisbane and Wunderlich Ltd. One of its key brands was Bristile with earthenware items known as Wembley Ware. Bristile was re-introduced in the 1960s with the manufacture of vitrified white crockery. In 1997 the name of Australian Fine China was adopted, and the company made china under this name until the closure of the Subiaco factory in 2006. From this time Australian Fine China has operated its business from its headquarters in Welshpool, Perth in Western Australia, with all the products now being made overseas. This item is significant because it represents a long-standing organisation in the Albury Wodonga Community.A white china mug bearing the outline of a spinning wheel, surrounded by black lettering,Around the spinning wheel ALBURY - Wodonga Handweavers & Spinners Guild Under the base - ARIA Porcelain made in Australia by Australian Fine China DIshwasher & Microwave Safethe albury wodonga handweavers and spinners guild, community groups

In the Sunshine Advocate of 21/03/1925 it is reported that Wunderlich Ltd decided to establish works in Sunshine for the manufacture of terra cotta and faience for the facing of city buildings. The product was intended to imitate granite, which would give a brighter appearance to concrete walls. A stone surface finish to the terra cotta could be achieved by applying a variety of colour combinations of glazes with a special 'spackle' gun. A building that is still standing and has the imitation granite finish terra cotta is the Nicholas Building at 21 - 47 Swanston Street, Melbourne. The Nicholas Building was designed by Harry Norris for Alfred Nicholas (Aspro fame), and was built during 1925 - 1926. The building is classified by the National Trust (B4079) and has the Victorian Heritage Register (H2119). During my employment in the factory from 1964 to 1969 the tiles were generally faced with single colour glazes. For some small jobs a light coloured mottled finish was achieved by spattering a white glaze over a cream coloured background or vice versa. There were no imitation granite jobs done, probably because of changing attitudes to the intended appearance of buildings. The green coloured tile in our collection is an unfinished (untrimmed) retain tile typical of the green coloured tiles that were made for the two stages of the Commonwealth Centre Building (colloquially known as the Green Latrine), that was once located on the corner of Spring and Victoria Streets in Melbourne. Similar coloured tiles were also used on some shop fronts. The Commonwealth Centre Building no longer exists, however the Century Building at 125 - 133 Swanston Street, Melbourne is covered with single coloured tiles (white). The Century Building was built in 1939, with the architect being Marcus Barlow. The Building is classified by the National Trust (B4045). Our tile along with several others were headed for dumping among the asbestos waste at the rear of the two Wunderlich factories (Circa 1968). With permission from the Factory Superintendent of the Terra Cotta factory they were saved and taken home. Several are still in use as pavers around a barbecue in Melton from where our tile was obtained. It should be noted that the Wunderlich Architectural Terra Cotta factory in Sunshine did not manufacture terra cotta roofing tiles, as reported in the Brimbank City Council Post-contact Heritage Study HO 073 former Wunderlich now West End Market. Wunderlich terra cotta roofing tiles were manufactured at their factory in Mitcham Road, Vermont. Document HO 073 contains at least 3 errors. 'Investigating the historic and current use, manufacture and conservation of architectural terra cotta and faience USA & UK'. This tile is an example of the type of facing that was applied to city buildings for over 40 years from the mid 1920's. As building techniques changed the need for this type of facing diminished, and so the factory was eventually sold and demolished. A free standing tall chimney stack which serviced two of the kilns was a significant feature of the North Sunshine skyline. A part of the history of Sunshine disappeared with the demolition of the factory and the chimney stack. Only the façade of the finishing section of the factory where tiles were trimmed and stored remains.
