Circa WW2 1940 - 1945. Used for RAAF Trainee pilots for Wirraway and Tiger Moth training. This helmet belonged to Francis Robertson, trainee RAAF Pilot who crashed his aircraft into Nurse Carter's residence at Chiltern (May 30th, 1943) whilst on a training flight from Advanced Training Squadron Deniliquin NSW. The Helmet is associated with Francis Robertson WW2 RAAF Pilot, trained at Number 7 Flying School Deniliquin NSW. Khaki Canvas and metal helmet used in WW2 circa 1943 for trainee pilots of Wirrway's and Tiger moths. Made of sturdy heavy duty canvas with some metal underlay, leather and sheepskin straps, brass attachment buckles. The outer surface has been printed in camouflage colours of black, green and brown. The junction of the painted segment is covered with a 15mm black line, hand painted. Inside the helmet is a leather head band with (3) leather pouches. They are approx 112.5 cm long x 7.5 wide. In those leather pouches are dense cotton pads. The chin strap is leather and is intact. Dr Ian Stephen MacLeod Murphy (1905-1981) studied at Geelong College (1919-1922) and then Melbourne University (1929-1937). He enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy in 1939 and served as a navy surgeon for the duration of World War II. He moved to Emerald in 1947 after running a successful medical practice in Hampton, with the intention of retiring and breeding turkeys. But Emerald and the surrounding districts had no doctor, so for the next 34 years, Dr. Murphy provided tireless medical care to the local community. Dr Murphy was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1977 for devotion to the health of the community. He died in 1981 at the age of 76 years and a Memorial Fund was set up in his name to provide support for local students studying Medicine. This type of head dress was very commonly worn by British Commonwealth Forces in the Sub Continent and other tropical areas. This particular example would have been a common sight in Northern Australia during the time frame, as well as Africa, Middle East and the Pacific. It is a light weight ventilated helmet offering good air circulation via the vent in the top of the crown, and shade to the back of the neck. As well as protection by the peaked front for the eyes reducing glare, preventing sun and heat stroke. It also created an image of gentlemanly dress and pride in appearance. It conformed to an ideal and was considered quite fashionable and a little dashing, often worn at a jaunty angle, creating a rakish air, far from today's simplistic view of pure functionality and at as low as possible cost. Whether worn with a tropical uniform with jacket and trousers, or open necked shirt and shorts, the wearer was easily identifiable as British or one of the Commonwealth countries.WW2 RAAF Wolsley cork helmet. Beige leather sweat band pierced around the top and with a cotton cord adjustment threaded around. Fixed to shell in four points diagonally. Interior is also covered in Khaki cotton.
