The Young Workers’ Patriotic Guild was formed in Victorian schools in 1916. Each child who raised one pound ‘by personal productive effort’ received a certificate. The money was used for the war effort. The Government Minister, Harry Sutherland Wightman Lawson, and the Director of Schools, Frank Tate, signed each certificate. Lawson (later Sir Henry) was the Attorney General in the Government of Alexander Peacock between 1915-17. He was to become Premier of Victoria in 1918. This is one of three Young Workers Patriotic Guild certificates in the Kew Collection, two from the First World War and one from the Second World War. The Collection includes a number of items produced under this banner from both the First and Second World Wars. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. The letter signed by the director of the fund details the award to Elma of a certificate of Effective Membership of the young Workers' Patriotic Guild. The letter details how the funds raised go to help those who have suffered during the great war. The certificate is from the Young Workers' Patriotic Guild, and includes mythical representations of 'Justice' and 'Peace' at the top, together with a female face wearing a laurel wreath. The Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report for 1921 states: 'It has been decided, for the present, to record the names of our students who served in the warm, in an Honor Book, and to defer the erectin of an Honor Board until we can feel ssured that the Roll is complete. the wide spread occupations of our students has rendered it very difficult for us to secure detailed information of their service. A handsome Honor Book and Case has been designed and executed by the staff ad students of the technical Art School, and the engrossing of the names and military records will be proceeded with as soon as possible. The Technical Art School was quite busy with commissions. The SMB Annual Report of 1918 states: 'under the direction of the Art principal (Mr H.H. Smith), the work of the Art School continues to receive wide public recognition. Handsome Honor Boars have been designed and executed for the Sydney Sports' Club, the St Arnaud High School, the Birregurra State School, the Wendouree State School and the Ballarat Old Colonists' Club. The names of over 400 SMB staff and students who served their country were not inscribed until 2012, despite names, ranks and service records being compiled. A restoration project was instigated as part of the 140th anniversary of the Ballarat School of Mines in 2010. Names were inscribed into the book by Calligrapher Lyn Forrester. The University of Ballarat believed this project is important not only to SMB's history, but the families and descendants of those who served while studying or teaching at SMB. If ever there was a war victim the late Mr Copland was one. But for the stress of work entailed by those repatriation classes and the amount of general war work which he performed Mr Copland would probably have been with them today." Understandably, SMB was thrown into some disarray by their Principal's death and the Honor Book was not completed. The University of Ballarat would like to finally honor its SMB war veterans by completing the Honor Book and as a further mark of respect, dedicate the project to Maurice Copland. Young Workers Patriotic Guild printed in large letters upon cardboard certification issued in 1917 to Frank Robbins a pupil of Leichardt School No 1317. Colour illustrations show figures of Justice and Peace above two kneeling students. Signed by H W Lawson Minister, F Tate Director and John J Bell Headmaster. Reverse has ink handwritten note signed F R 2/8/1968, stating, 'This is how the children won . The First World War. Each child received a certificate which was in a frame . Set up by the Education Department in 1915, students undertook to make money by their personal efforts. It was then donated to the Patriotic Fund in support of WW1 soldiers. When a student had earnt 1 pound they received a certificate from the Education Department.Young Workers' Patriotic Guild Members Contribution Card. Red card with black print no: 30621. The logo is a bee in a circle with EVD at the top and Young Workers Patriotic Guild in a banner inside the circle. Name and number of the school is 1317 Leichardt. The member is Frank Robbins and the first entry on the card is 1916 July. The entry is -carrying milk to bricklayer's 2/6 . August entry - saying recitation well 1/. Sept - Taking flowers to Mrs Creks. /3 Oct - Seed her side. 2/6 Nov - do. 8/3 Dec - Bottles & Vegies. 3/6. Jan 1917. Cr. Sale Violet roots flower Day. 2/. All signed by John J Bell. A certificate was given when £1 was reached. The monthly contributions were sent to the District Treasurer towards the War effort. On the back is a list of jobs hand written in black ink.
