Part of the Zakrzewski Collection of spinning wheels donated to the National Wool Museum by Mr Wlodzimierz Zakrzewski. For many years, Mr Zakrzewski collected, researched and repaired spinning wheels from all over the world. This wheel is from Yugoslavia and dates from the early 20th century. It is made from Poplar Alba. The treadle bar runs obliquely from beneath the right arm of the T-shaped base to beneath the stem of the T. The mounting of the wheel and the flyer mechanism are reversed. This is in order that flax may be spun with one hand or that plying may be done. Athol Gill was born in Wauchope, NSW, on 5th September 1937. On 25th April 1959 he married Judith Prior. In 1960 he enrolled to become a Baptist minister studying at the Baptist Theological College of NSW. A strong call to higher studies took him to London where he obtained his BD (Hons) and later to Zurich where he attained his Masters and a Doctorate of Theology. Athol lectured in Biblical Studies in both Baptist and Methodist Theological Colleges in Brisbane, moved to Melbourne in 1974 to become Dean of Whitley College, then in 1979 was appointed Professor of New Testament where he continued until his death. He was widely respected for his academic work but also for his remarkable commitment to living the faith he taught. Athol lived, with his family, in Christian Community for nearly all his adult life - in Brisbane at the House of Freedom, and for his last seventeen years as founding leader of the House of the Gentle Bunyip linked with the Clifton Hill Baptist Church, which later became known as the Community Church of St Mark. The House of the Gentle Bunyip came into being in 1975 during the Anzac Day weekend when Athol was teaching on "Discipleship" from the Gospel of St Mark. He announced he was commencing a Christian community to explore and expound the meaning of discipleship. 35 people, mainly young and single, agreed to join him. Athol was a provocative advocate for the poor and for social justice. He campaigned relentlessly for the Church to reflect the teachings of Jesus and for a peaceful and just society. This was evident in his simple lifestyle and through his practical engagement in mission with the poor and marginalised. Honoured in Australia and internationally as a brilliant theologian, teacher and author, Athol is also remembered for his love of sport, especially for the Carlton Football Club, his unique sense of humour and his warm humanity. He died suddenly on 9th March 1992. Linux For Beginners proposes a 10.00am workshop introducing the free non-Microsoft computer operating system, Linux. The red and black graphic reworks Linux’s Penguin Mascot and shows the animal gazing down at The Kosmaj Spomenik, a utopian monument sited in the former Yugoslavia. Each of the four works comprising Emily Floyd’s suite of prints All Day Workshops is a proposal for a workshop exploring ideas of social freedom, co-operative learning and open communication. These large-scale posters combine stylised illustrations with the artist’s geometric typography. Each work in All Day Workshops extends Floyd’s investigation into learning and play as a form of expanded sculpture. In 2012, to celebrate the Australian Print Workshop 30th anniversary six Australian artists including Emily Floyd were commissioned to create a suite of works for a series of exhibitions under the title ‘Catalyst’. Floyd’s works are three colour plate lithographs, printed from three photo-litho plates. Photocopy of an article in the State Electricity Commission of Victoria Magazine, Contact, Vol 1, No. 4, Feb 1937 titled "Tramway 'Hold-up' in Ballarat". The story is about the hold up of the tram service by Swans and cygnets crossing the road in Wendouree Parade. Each item had a thin strip of paper attached by staple to the top left hand corner, giving the Vol. No. details. Enlisted 24 August 1940 at Caulfield, Vic. Discharged 13 Sept 1945. He was captured at Tobruk in 1941. Listed as a POW on 26 .6.41, and sent to Capua, Italy on 1.1.42. Escaped to Yugoslavia 23.10.42 and recaptured 27.10.42. Transferred to Stalag 18A (Wolfsberg, Austria) 28.12.1943 after Italian Armistice. Released to UK 4.8.1945. 2. Letter from Mary Williams to son Albert Williams dated 22nd April, 1945. In the letter, Mary relates local news. Letter was sent via AIRMAIL. Stamp on back of 1. (Gepruft, Stalag XV111A) possibly a forgery created by prisoners to avoid camp censor, Gepruft means checked or passed.
