Major-General John K Forsyth CMG raised 1st Light Horse Brigade. The men of the 4th Light Horse Regiment regarded him as their first CO, although technically he was not, and always referred to him as 'Dad". He did not officially assume command of the 4th until it reached Egypt, effective from 13 December 1914.
