Significance

Candle remnants from early Ballarat mines are quite rare.

Physical description

.1) White/cream candle remnant. Candle mold seams are evident. Stored in green pharmaceutical tin with screw lid. (?) Found when removing for filling motor spaces Camp Street.

.2) white candle remnant from the Britannia Mine at Cambrian Hill held in a 'Barker Cake Container; tin. A handwritten note inside the tin indicates 'Piece of Candle from Mullock's Britannia Mine. Ballarat.

Picked up by Donald Doyles Mather whilst cleaning out Ballarat South Goldfield Co's Leviathan Shaft when reopening "Great Leviathan in in the year 1948.
The candle was last used by miners in the Great Leviathan in the drive where found
