Historical information

The bluestone mill has been a prominent landmark in Mortlake since it was built in 1856 by Thomas Bostock. It was sold in 1857 to Hamilton, Aikman and Geddes who converted it to be powered by steam. Its use declined after the Ararat goldfields petered out and the demand for flour declined as diggers moved on. Local soils also proved unsuited to the sustained cultivation of wheat. The existing mill chimney is Heritage listed and part of the National Estate.
