Historical information

This unnamed ship model was built by a Warrnambool resident, Mr Edward Howard Grainger. The River Humber Keel design is a typical sailing craft used for the transport of inshore and inland cargo, from Humber and Hill, around Yorkshire, U.K., in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Significance

This model is an example of the craft of ship model making, which has been a popular hobby for hundreds of years. Our collection has many ship models, some of which were built by professional model makers, others by naval enthusiasts.

Physical description

Ship model: sailing ship with a single mast, double spar, and a humber keel. Two-tone brown and cream paint, light brown sail. Figures of a man, woman and dog on deck. A type of vessel used on the Yorkshire waterways. Perspex case with wooden frame.
Folded plans are inside the case.
Nameplate Plaque inside the case describes the ship.
