Summary

The Extra Pharmacopoeia (widely known simply as "Martindale") is one of the most famous reference texts in global pharmacy and medicine.
While official national pharmacopoeias (such as the British Pharmacopoeia) set strict, legally binding standards for standard medicines, Martindale was created to fill the gaps by providing dynamic, practical, and clinical information on unregistered, experimental, proprietary, and off-label drugs, as well as detailed notes on posology (dosages), drug toxicity, and chemical properties. Volume 1 focuses heavily on the Materia Medica an exhaustive, alphabetical compendium of chemical substances, plant extracts, vaccines, sera, and antitoxins, complete with practical formulations that were used in clinical practice at the time.
