These lead beater balls were used be plumbers to shape metal. The balls would be held in a sling and the lead was formed around them by being beaten with a hammer or mallet.

Significance

These lead beater balls are a good example of the tools of trade for plumbers.

Physical description

Lead Beater Balls, quantity of 47, rounded solid wooden balls with domed ends, various sizes. Balls were used by plumbers for beating lead into different shapes and sizes, spheroid in shape and ranging in size. Balls were placed in a sling and lead was formed around them by beating with a Bossing mallet e.g. Item No 1449.
