Used in the Orbost district prior to electricity being connected (early 1960s). Used for ironing clothes.

Significance

This is an example of a domestic appliance commonly used before electricity connection was widespread.

Physical description

A metal iron enamelled in blue colour, with a silver coloured fuel reservoir shaped like a bowl. This most likely stored Shellite which was the fuel to heat the iron. The handle is also blue and made of wood.
