Historical information

James Baines was principal of Torquay primary school, a local historian and genealogist and authority on Australian plants. He and his wife Ray were responsible for the manufacture and erection of street signs in the fledgling township of Torquay circa 1937. The signs were later removed by the Council and replaced by "official" signage.

Significance

A great example of local initiative and community involvement.
