Historical information
Used in the Palace Hotel, Torquay. In the Municipal Directory of 1891 it was said to be "large and comfortable with 35 rooms" and could accommodate 150 people. The building was designed by architect Joseph Watts and built by Charles Mills, both from Geelong.
Significance
Significant because the hotel no longer exists. It opened in December 1888 as the Pioneer Coffee Palace, and was destroyed by fire in 1976. Today's Torquay Hotel is on the original site.
