Historical information
The Sturt Street Gardens had its origins in the 1851 survey of Ballarat West by W.S. Urquhart. A generous reserve was allocated for the main streets of Ballarat, of which Sturt Street was the first. In the 1860s Sturt Street was planted with blue gums, with dual carriageway and central median Strip. Bandstands were soon erected.
