Replica of the historic immigration ship Success built in India. It was deserted at Geelong by the crew rushing to the gold fields 1853. Purchased by the Victorian Government to house prisoners until Pentridge prison was built. Internally it was given over to prison cells. On the deck it was reduced to one mast and small huts were placed to house warders and wives. Two children were known to have been born in these deck huts- one of these was Bella Guerin. She became the first Australian women to gain a Melbourne University BA and MA degree .

The Williamstown Council, which was formed in 1856, made an application to the Victorian Government for the Weights and Measures. Williamstown Council was the first council in Victoria to have/use these standard measures.
Used by Council Inspector of Weights and measures to all shops, businesses, hawkers and delivery vehicles to ensure that all liquid measures and weights were correct. They were used until decimal currency came in 1966.
Solid brass cylindrical measure with glass cap, which is part of the measurement system. Liquid must fill the container and penetrate the glass, lid via a central hole,to fill the well on the surface of same glass lid. Used by Council Inspector of weights and measures.

this item was a thirteenth birthday present to Mary Beatrice Lydia Ashford from her father, Captain Charles Ashford of the Port Phillip Pilots Association in 1900. It was re-gifted to her grand-daughter on her thirteenth birthday in 1960.

Williamstown formed as a Municipal Government in 1856 and applied to the Victorian Government for a set of standard weights that would ensure all businesses etc would weigh their goods correctly. They arrived in Williamstown and were used from 1860 until 1966 when decimalisation was established in Australia. T
These weights were the first of their kind to be acquired in Victoria.
15 round brass Imperial standard weights in 3 timber cases, weights weighing 1/2oz to 56lbs. Numbers 1 to 11 with rounded knobs and largest 4 (12 to 15) with rounded handles. 12 smallest in timber case, next 2 weights in timber case & largest in timber case.
13 have Potter London engraved, also stamped are various verification dates.
