Burley Cutting Knife (Tobacco)

Historical information

Tobacco farming began circa 1960 in the Kiewa Valley and consequently became one of its major industries. Many of the Italian families were involved in tobacco farming.

Significance

Historical: This equipment was used on one of the tobacco farms in the Kiewa Valley. The cutting knife is home-made showing the resourcefulness of farmers living in the Kiewa Valley.
Provenance: The tobacco farmer is from a local farming family in the Kiewa Valley.

Physical description

Steel 4 sided rod with blade attached at 1 end, blade at an angle to top. Handle covered with deteriorating leather by nails. Between rod & leather is a green rubber hose as part of the handle.
