Summary

The Prose Works of John Milton, Volume 1 is part of a five-volume set issued by London publisher Henry G. Bohn beginning in 1848, as part of his well-known "Bohn's Standard Library" series of affordable classics. This particular volume gathers Milton's major political prose defending the execution of Charles I and the English republic: A Defence of the People of England, The Second Defence of the People of England, and Eikonoklastes (Milton's rebuttal to the royalist Eikon Basilike). It includes a portrait frontispiece of Milton and runs to 496 pages. The set as a whole was edited with a preface, preliminary remarks, and notes by James Augustus St. John, and volumes 4–5, covering a treatise on Christian doctrine, were separately translated by Charles R.
