Summary
Pastoral Symphony (1939) is an Australian historical novel set during the early years of British settlement in New South Wales, primarily during the governorship of Arthur Phillip. Unlike many early Australian bush-life stories focusing on convict labour or harsh pioneer struggles, Pastoral Symphony traces the origins of Australia's livestock and pastoral industries. It follows early settlers, stockmen, and breeders as they adapt European agriculture to the harsh Australian terrain. It was intended by Hardie as the first instalment in an ambitious historical novel trilogy.
