Summary

Santa Barbara, published in full as Santa Barbara, etc., is an 1891 collection of six short stories by the English Victorian author Ouida (the pen name of Maria Louise Ramé). It contains "Santa Barbara", "Poussette", "Rinaldo", "The Halt", "The Stable Boy" and "La Rossiccia". Set against Italian backdrops, the title story follows a tragedy involving social injustice, passion, animal welfare and human suffering in rural Italy. The broader collection examines typical late-Victorian issues such as class divides, emotional betrayal, the clash between traditional Italian peasant life and industrial modernisation, and cruelty toward animals.
