Summary
Lost Island is a short novel about a Polynesian atoll untouched by World War II. George Dodd, an American engineer from Detroit, lands on the island with a blueprint in his pocket. Seabees and bulldozers follow him to turn the atoll into a coral-built base for American bombers. One reader describes the book as a bitter account of an American military base corrupting a traditional island culture, focused more on island society than on the war. Another notes that Hall had made clear in earlier works that he detested the automobile and the machine age, a theme that runs through the book.
