Summary

Subject volume is a free promotional recipe booklet, that Clements Tonic Ltd of Rozelle, Sydney gave away from the 1930s a common form of advertising ephemera of the time. Copies are described as having 32 pages, centre-stapled, with black and white illustrations, testimonials, household hints, recipes and advertisements. The front cover shows the “To the housewife” page. It promotes the tonic as a way to keep a family healthy alongside good meals, and a testimonial from a fencing instructor appears on the facing page. The booklet was aimed at helping housewives to prepare inexpensive dishes. The booklet also has other advertisements promoting other company products such as Fletcher’s Pills.
