Summary

Church Praise was the congregational hymnal of the Presbyterian Church of England, which formed in 1876 when the English congregations of the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland merged with other English Presbyterian congregations. The title page reads “Part I – Complete Metrical Psalms; Part II – Hymns”, which means the book contains the whole Psalter in singable rhymed verse, followed by a section of hymns. It was sold through the church’s Publications Committee, as the title page confirms. The 1883 first edition was a larger work that included a third part, the Bible Psalter, with music arranged and partly composed by Sir Herbert Oakeley.
